No numbers yet but we are expecting about a 20-30 mile range in stop and go traffic. If 220 V AC is available, about 4-5 hours to charge. More then double if only 110 is available.

    Remember-only 6 and 12 volts are traditional.

  5. Put a hood on it, and really loud stereo speakers with real car sounds.

  6. But only 100 ft/lbs of torque.:( I'll stick with gasoline. Good build quality however.

I dig it! I like that the motor is direct drive....that would go great in an RPU if the motor was bolted directly to the axle w/no drive shaft and "floated" with the rear end.
It might be OT, but not for long!! Thanks for posting and best of luck at the races!!

I figured this was wrong. I know electrics are known for their torque. I think that number is almost instantaneous isn't it?

  15. that's great..no pollution , now all we have to do is build more power plants

They used 24 Volts in WWII, lots of equipment powered by that voltage ;)

I'd have thought that a traction motor (electric) would have been the best choice.....??

Then the reverse wouldn't be an issue.

I had some build experience with electric trains prior to retirement from GE. I always thought that they - the electric motor - would be greatly suited as an alternative drive system in a vehicle - bar the space issues.

    Kewl idea.

    my thoughts....

All electric motors have a peak torque at 0rpm. :)

    That T roadster is neat!

I may be way off here, but wouldn't a trans work here? Theroy would say that it would use alot less power in order to transfer/multiply torque and having a much longer driving range.

One would have to be able to determine what RPM would work in order not to destroy the trans with that amount of torque. another alternative would be a quickchange so that one can lower the final drive and again use much less power but retain speed. Does that sound doable????

I'm not that familiar with Electro Rods but I sure dig the idea of not paying for foreign drilled oil. I'd even look into solar panels to make the hood and deck lid out of in order to at least regenerate some of the spent energy.

  21. Keep in mind that this is a race car; a street version should be cheaper and have a better range.

Can someone post the video on Youtube?

    Thanks,
    Kurt

very smart idea. i wonder, could you use fork-truck drive motor(s)?

  23. My buddy up here does conversions and took me for a ride a few weeks ago in a little Miata...weirdest sensation with wind noise being the only thing you heard and the acceleration was very impressive

This kind of build has been on my mind a lot lately. I'm thinking about going hydrogen on a my flattie six. I don't even know if that is possible, but it would be a cool experiment.

Some guys hook pancake motors to the front wheels that act as generators when the brakes are applied. Regenerative braking. :)

For that matter, wouldn't it be cool to have generators hooked up to the front wheels full-time?

But...but...there's nothing to leak! That ain't right. Ya gotta rig up an bag of oil or antifreeze or something so that it leaves a little puddle wherever it goes.

    Cool build! I like it...
