****em'. if you want a nascar model now i guess you'll just have to slap some stp stickers on a bar of soap, and throw some wheels on it. NASCAR is a sham. when was the last time you saw a stock car with 650 hp, a tube frame, and a composite body. and i wont even get started on the redneck mafia. (no offence to anyone)

Well, considering Pontiac pulled out of NASCAR, Petty Enterprises didn't have much choice BUT move on, and the Dodges were re-entering NASCAR at that same time. Can't drive what isn't there. Not too hard to answer that one.

    "Too much" money corrupts everything.

    The original motivation,and ideals,get sacrificed.

You REALLY think the issue is the models from Nascar 50+ years ago???? No, they are fighting over the new **** and if you think that has anything to do with TRADITIONAL rodding, its you that needs the book. A Model A and a Focus might both be Fords, but one belongs here, one doesn't.

Not a Revell kit, but here's a rat rod kit I picked up last year at Hobby Lobby.

Tell me about it.. Wal Mart ****s as bad as NASCAR and Politics. There is no where in my town of 20,000 to buy a model. I have to drive 30 miles to a Hobby Lobby and they don't have a great selection.

  13. I've been buying most of mine off the 'net. Better selection. Thanks, Mike

way too much of this **** goes on, i bowl, and as such, have found a bowling BB, the pro bowlers can only use equiptment made by companies that pay 'fees' to the PBA. not sure if this applies to TV only appearances or not, the original topic was about how a shoe manufacturer was 'dropped' from 'acceptable use' due to it's inability/unwillingness to pay it's 'sanction' fee.

I gotta think this wont do anything but HURT the model industry.

It's just my speculation, but I'd bet NASCAR models were a good chunk of their income. Every redneck's little kid starts getting hooked on NASCAR so they buy their favorite drivers car. Revell only has to swap out decal sheets to make a whole new kit, so money out of pocket is small....no tooling costs. But maybe the NASCAR fees were high enough to negate that.

And probably the biggest percentage of NASCAR model builders are adults. I've seen people with collections of hundreds of models, all NASCAR, all variances of maybe 3 different kits. Stockpiles of 50-100 kits. I bet they're really *****ing now.

I hope it was a good business move for Revell, especially in a time when models are out and video games are in. They've been turning out some great new kits, and I'd really hate to see that stop.

Would the shine runners be hopped-up Too???? Cool !!!

I've hated NASCAR since the early '70's

    HAMB Drags....I love it !!!

  19. Who doesn't get it?
Lets look at this, so something is being stopped due to exorbitant licensing fees. It is not only NA SCAR taking a chunk, every sponsor, every part on the model that replicates something real has to be payed for by the model company.
What does that mean? Well the damn model is a replica of a real thing! They have to pay for everything!
Unfortunately Ford are well ahead of everyone in the licensing department, it was Ford that put Sli** on its ***.
So what does all that mean to us? Simple, no more model kits of model As, no more 32s no more shoe boxes, 37s, 40s, zip.
Ok, so its a bit worse to us model builders, but lets remove our head from our ****s for 30 seconds and think about it. Hand up if you got into hotrds from model cars?
Them and magazines are responsible for a good 50% of hot rodders. Now you take out a link in the evolution of a real car builder and you got little Johnny buying a BMW because it was the cool car in whatever movie.
What happens to our little world? Yup, it gets smaller, less demand=less parts being made. Less cars out there, it can end.

I seem to notice when a store carries a small selection of models, they always seem to have 3 or 4 real dusty looking ones marked down. And they're often nascars of not-popular drivers. Seems like a risky choice for a retailer to stock em, and maybe that's part of the problem.

Regarding the moaning about wal mart.....I thought we liked supporting the little guys, such as independent hobby shops. Overall isn't it a good thing they left the market??

Maybe the model companies will fill the gap with other motorsports, there's always a need for more dragsters, pullers, boggers, etc.

Yep its the times, 'they are a changing!'. Everybody is trying to make a buck selling **** and tacking costs on everthing. Thats whats happening, we arent a producing economy anymore. Nascar racing need lots n lots of $$$ and they are trying to make bucks on anything that they can. Remember the dirt tracks? Thats real racing! Nascar is too much like racing on a freeway trying to p*** somebody.

It might fail in today's economy,... it'll be tough if it takes $1,000 for a family to attend a Nascar race when they barely have enough for groceries!

It's a shame. I'll bet a lot of people on this board grew up building models. This doesn't make the future of Revell look very good either.

I build models when I get tired of spending big dollars on 1-1 cars.
I have never liked nascar, as I grew up in the golden age of drag racing in so cal.
As far as Revell goes, you have to realize, they don't make a lot of money per kit. What with the cost of making the tooling and plastic and such.
Also, the model companies make quite a few top fuel dragster, funny cars, altered wheel base ones too, and old rod types and yes, even some so-called rat rods.
Speaking of Revell, you should see what they are coming out with next year!
Search Revell and go to their site.
There are still several companies making models. AMT is letting private companies lease their tooling, JOHAN is still in business, with several new companies being formed too.
I believe the model companies are beginning to see, it's the adult modelers, not the kids, is where their profits are.
As most people seem to like the 1/25th and 1/24th scale, that's what is made the most.
If anyone is interested, there are quite a few model related swap meets and shows all year long across the country. I buy a lot of my parts box stuff at these shows. Several vendors will sell plastic bagged models and parts for 1-10 dollars.
Go to the net and search for Model Car magazine or Scale Auto magazine. They have event schedules and ads for them.
WARNING!! you can get heavy into it again if your not careful.
Look at me, just 1 year and I've got over 150 models and have built, at last count, 18 this year. Their addictive little ******s. Most of mine are replicas of 1-1's I am building or will build. Also, as such, most of mine are scratch built, just like the 1-1's are.

If I was a Model Car exec, I would be doing compact car models, with lots of body kit and spoiler options. that is what the young kids want. just like we wanted hotrods and muscle cars. I think dumping Nascar is a smart move, I love NASCAR but its gotten out of control.. Let NASCAR make and sell Models themselves if they think there is a solid market.

  29. Many interesting repsonses to the original post!

Last Sunday I went to one of the last decent modelcar/diecast shows around Chicagoland. I was looking for Vintage Nascar kits, drag kits and '70's and older car kits I can build into racecars and customs with.

Revell may have had to pull out on account of licensing fees, can't blame them. Look what happened to Sli**. Now Sli** makes the best drag racing decals around. Now I build and look for vintage drag models. But, I venture to think that some visionary executive at Revell saw that there was no future in producing "The Cars of Tommorrow". I actually stopped following Nascar racing myself after being a rabid fan for about 40 years on account of those. I gave it a chance, they don't inspire me.

Last summer my wife and I went to about a dozen short track asphalt races locally to watch the Late Models run. We had a ball and it didn't even come close to being a expensive night out.

I hope that Revell and any of the other model producers left will pick up a issue of Rod & Custom or Rod & Kulture, etc. and start producing great Hot Rod and Custom models. They did it once, it could and should work again.

    Joel

Yeah, me too. Haven't been to a cup race since Bristol '03 and don't care if I go to another one. Use to be you could sit in the stands and talk racing, last time I was there most "fans" were only interested in was Dale Jr. Hey I like the guy but I feel kinda sorry for him. Wifey got a garage p*** (my brother works for Joe Gibbs Racing) & saw Junior, she said the poor guy had to hide his face, then sprint back & forth to avoid the crush of groupies. Couldn't imagine that happening to Curtis Turner, or even Dale Sr! I remember seeing a quote where Big Bill France said NASCAR was just entertainment - I don't think what it has evolved into was what he meant. Sad. And now it looks like Richard Petty's had to sell out to the corporate a**es too. Would love see folks like Smokey, Holman & Moody, Maurice Petty & others back in the series. But it'll never be the same again.

Several years ago while @ Ft Benning GA I found a small hobby store that had quite a few 1/24th plastic kits of old NASCAR teams, from the mid & late 60s. I wanted to buy a few of them but flew in there & didn't have room for 'em. Haven't seen any of them anyplace else. I don't remember who made them. I haven't bought any new kits in years. Too boring.
