    In the interest of accuracy:

Camping World has stepped up to sponsor the truck series for '09 and beyond.

I'd say Bernie has a leg up, Bill France turned over the day-to-day operation of NASCAR to Mike Helton and son, Brian France in 2000, and then he died of lung cancer in '07.

In my own personal opinion, it's those two guys that are screwing up NASCAR. But that's not important.

As both a lifelong model builder and NASCAR fan, I have nearly 50 years of participating in both activies, and I don't plan to stop either. I think the problem here is that most of the legal types involved in this situation don't understand the difference between a plastic model builder and a die-cast collector. It really is two completely seperate markets. They fear that Revell's kits will cut into their die-cast sales.

As for model companies going out of business, I already have more than I can build in the amount of life I have left.

So, I really couldn't care less.

About 50% of the kits in that photo are NASCAR subjects, the rest is drag racing and hot rod stuff.

My Name is Lobucrod and I'm a Nascar Fan. There, its out in the open. I have been to a few cup races at Fort Worth but I'd rather sit in front of the tube in my easy chair and watch it. Might even take a nap in the middle of the race. I do have to admit its been getting pretty boring lately though with the COT. My naps have been getting longer. I yearn for the days when two cars would crash and the drivers would get out throwing punches. I love to watch the old films when it was STOCK CAR racing but it will never be that way again. Who would want to see front wheel drive cars buz around the track anyway.

Just think if everyone on the hamb bought just one Revell model kit. Like others on here, I've built one nascar model ,many years ago, and it was a lighter shade of blue with a big red decal on it.

Yeah, I don't understand some of these companies. They are WAY too reactionary and not enough proactive business being done. I mean you don't need a crystal ball to know there's gonna be some bumpy times ahead, adjust now before you DO shoot yourself in the foot.
I agree with Weasel, just cuz they refuse to acknowledge a problem does not make it go away.

Look for a local dirt track.
In my experience, around here, the racing is generally better.

Winged Sprint Cars on dirt, will make you forget all about NASCAR

King Richard sold the majority of his operation to a bunch of suits
with too much money, who don't know **** about racing.

Now they are in over their heads, no sponsors, no "name" drivers, and no clue.

  10. I think it's the other way around - die cast cut into the kits. The trend the last 10 years or so in a lot of hobby markets has been away from kits - even the simplest kits - and into stuff that's ready to go on the shelf - or on the model train layout.

Just as an example the standard Athearn HO model train freight car kit that's been on the market since the late '50s. They're so simple I can just about build them blindfolded in about 5 minutes - and they're selling them built up now for about two-three times the price they used to be. Everything new that comes out, comes built up and you're lucky if you can find a kit.

Now 20 years ago, you wanted Nascar models, you had the Monogram and AMT kits and that was that. There was no die cast 1/24th scale on the market. Today I can go into any Wal-mart, K-mart, Target and get die cast Nascar stock cars and other cars in three scales, all done with no work. The ones with beer sponsors you have to special order if you don't want the goofy ones (more political correct ********, I played with toys with beer logos on them as a kid and I still think most beer tastes like ***), but outside of that.. heck, you can even get Michael Waltrip's car. I bought a bunch of the HO scale ones myself.

It's like even the hobbyist has gotten lazy, or at least the market thinks we have. But I see the same thing in the auto market - a lot of people want finished cars and not only won't mess with a rusty old pile, they can't see the potential in it or even the value of the parts on it. I've had guys whining at me on eBay this week over an old truck I posted that has just about no rust, and runs and goes - the paint is just flat and peeling in places and looks like **** - and they're going on about it being priced too high and being junk. Lazy *******s.

Or maybe I'm overthinking it - Wal-mart not carrying these kits any longer may just be the reason why. They were buying a lot of kits up front, and the kits did seem to sell - it was pretty rare to find them clearanced out.

That's what happens when you run a business (NASCAR) like our federal government.

I never understood why they couldn't have put in a couple of dirt tracks, I at least hope Mark does good next year, he can probably drive anything with wheels. Tony stuart had a great idea with that short track race on the track he owns. I think those guys had more fun then they've had all year. :D

  13. Thanks for this thread. It got me into the other room building one of the 50 or so models I have yet to build. Most are dirt track, Modifieds, drag racing.
Never bought a nascar. Just didn't care much for stock cars.
Having said that, I still think it's more entertaining than football. Football is something you do when there's no car racing. Thanks, Mike

The model hobby has changed a lot. Last time I went in to get some glue they treated me like I was dope fiend. 2 pieces of I.D. to verify my grey bearded bald headed age. A DEA background check seemed to be the next logical step.
