I was wondering what types of ignition systems are being used on the flathead Fords. Are you using stock type points, Mallory points or electronic, mag, some homebrew setup, front mount distributor, or side mount? Just want to know.
bone stock, although roto-faze is still making some neat dual points types for early and late flatheads.... pricey but well built.
81A ('40) with original dual-point distributor converted by Philbin Mfg. to electronic with Pertronix modules and high output 6v coil.
I use a cut down Delco window dizzy.with a Carex dual point plate. Mechanical advance only. It's an early chevy cast iron core. I tried a Pertronix module in it, but bushing wear was causing rotor/plate scraping. I went back to the dual points, but I think stock(chevy) single points would work just as well.Sparky
I am running a Harmon Collins dual coil dist. but am modifying an Accel dual point 79xxx module on a two bolt front mount ford housing. This eliminates the Ford vacuum ? setup and gives a adjustable max advance with a screw change. Does anyone have advice on initial advance and max centrifugal advance for a pure mechanical distributer ? The engine is 255 ci. with Isky 400 jr cam, alum heads and three carbs. de Chrome
Hey Crew, Mopar small block electronic. its looks neat (better then HEI?) check the tech-o-matic for conversion details. Mech advance only. Danny
Old Mallory (8BA type) on loan from the Lancaster Museum of Flathead and early Ford history. I've added nothing but external bolt-ons to my motor and this seems to be the single best improvment.
hey guys, just to second grim, it doesnt really matter what it is, any aftermarket dizzy seems to make a dramatic inprovement to the way the motor runs. i know it *shouldnt* but it does. at least that is my experience and everyone i know who runs one. the single best piece ive added to my ride as far as performance goes. im sure its just the way the advance works in aftermarket compared to the OEM model. in my instance, the mopar electronic allows for a hotter spark which can only be a good think. I'm running a Mallory dual point with NAPA points and condenser.......Mallory Chinese points and condenser were junk. Read many times on the Ford Barn about that. The points only lasted 300 miles and I went ahead and changed the condenser befor even driving it.
Modified Chev distributor, both vac and mech advance - has plate machined and mounted underneath to clamp to 8BA head - Jacobs elctronics guts - magnetic triger -, hooked to a Jacobs "Boost Master" - for the S.C.o.T blower - that allows adjustable advance and retard at the dash while "on the fly."
Don't need an ignition system. I converted my flathead to diesel. It was tough getting the compression up. JB Weld is wonderful stuff.
