Hot Rods What is a "real" hotrod?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JimSibley, Jun 6, 2015.

  1. Exactly, the modern day version of the fad T. I don't doubt that a lot of people got their start with that type of build.

    A rose by any other name . . .

I haven't seen the car in question but before there were rat rods there were jalopies and then beaters. Most of the time the money got spent on mechanicals and the finish was down the road a way or done by the next owner. What killed R.R.s was the goofiness that ensued after the beginnings of it, a sort of one-upmanship, take the idea of cruising a jalopy and trying to make them worse than the guy before instead of better. :(

Oh my...........now I'm more confused. I took it as a compliment when you said if it weren't for my wheels, I'd have a first class jalopy. Now I find out a jalopy was the predecessor of the Rat Rod. : )

  3. Well someone once said, there is no new thing under the sun. :D

I think of "rat rods" as being the junk built to shock the normal hot rodders sensibilities. Easier to recognize it than to describe it. And the only thing wrong on suthanman's rod is the wheels

Your comment about rat rods is right on in many cases. But there are a lot of cars out there people would call rat rods that I just don't see it that way. To me, they are a hot rod in every sense of what I have came to believe hot rodding was all about when it first started. As I said before, nothing wrong with building a car the way they did in the 50s. But in the 50s they didn't have the blueprint to follow. They built a car with what they had and tried to make it faster.

LOL........I haven't had one person that thinks my wheels are even close to being acceptable. EVERYONE says those wheels have to go. Oddly enough that car was built around those wheels. They were on the car when I bought it. One of these days I will change them. They don't seem to bother me near as bad as they do others. The Hot Rodders want something more period correct, the Street Rodders say they are outdated and it needs something more modern. One of my car buddies thinks I need to put some spinner knockoffs on them!

This is my real hot rod. Three pedals; no fenders and no valve covers. 2015-12-23 14.16.39.jpg
