Customs What is a reasonable compressor for a decent garage paint job?

  1. This is what I have and it will paint anything you want. The CFM is key.

HP Ratings are usually total bullshit. Just like in tread mills the manufacturers use the more impressive PEAK #, but in reality peak HP only lasts momentarily on startup. ACTUAL HP is the number you should be concerned with.

Just be mindful of what the electrical circuits on your property can support.

Inrush current is a thing, so the load Amp max is less that what it will draw on startup.

Smaller home compressors often do not have an unloader valve like larger ones, or commercial units.

A compressor without one has to start against tank pressure, and that can create a substantial Amp spike.

    Found a used 220v 80 gallon, 5 running hp Kobalt…16 cam at 90psi and 17.3 at 40psi
    155 max psi…used
    How does that sound?
Any tips on what to look for?
    Thanks for all your help

In many years of being around many different types of air compressors, I've never seen one without an unloader valve , some are an in tank combo valves , some are internal regulator combo valves & some are centrifugal . but they're always there IME.

Yep, even smaller roll around single stage compressors have an unloader, part of pressure regulator.
