What year? What model? What body? What transmission, power accessories etc? Typical would be 18 in an early fifties car with 3 speed. 16 or 17 in an early sixties Powerglide car. Could go 20 or 21 with overdrive. The worst would be a 1960 Powerglide station wagon with air and all power accessories. 15 to 16. It also depends on what kind of driving you do. Traffic driving kills mileage. Best numbers will be on rural roads at 35 to 50. Going over 65 will cut your mileage drastically. Unless you do like Greaser 815 and use an overdrive manual trans with high geared rear axle. Dual exhaust, high compression and a sharp tuneup will also increase mileage.
I put my car together for long distance, weekend runs. I still have fun around town, but not the greatest mileage unless on the highway. But yeah, depends what your running and how your running it.
To squeeze every bit out of it: Synthetic motor/trans/rear end fluids. Hottest coil, GOOD plug wires. Brass cap. Spark plugs dialed in to the rest of the package. A fine tuned exhaust aimed at making power and mileage. Wheel bearing packed w/synthetic grease. A true carb man setting up for mileage goals. Brake adjustment spot on. Alignment perfect-o. Steering box tight, no wandering (resistance) to and fro. Driving the slow lane. Using a vacuum gauge.
