What is it about a 32 Coupe?

  1. Rusty, Its going to be a personal decision. I never thought I'd own a '32. I, like a lot of others, thought they were over rated. But, I bought one and fell in love with its soul and ended up buying another. Is it totally satisfying, not at all.....us car guys enjoy the hunt and the build of old tin. That never ever changes. But the feeling I get when I'm behind one is like none of the others.

I know where you stand with the '38. I'm at the same junction with my '34 5-window. Its a cool car with cool history, but if I change any more of the car it'll lose its old character....so I kinda stuck with it the way it is....not being able to change it.

If you decide to part with the '38. you should feel good that you brought history back to life for others to feel. I think that anyone who stumbles on something like that car faces the same responsibility/delima.

As much as I love that '38, if I were in your shoes I'd say I've done what I was supposed to do with the '38 and move on. Hopefully the new owner would be a good caretaker and have the same responsiblity.

Would the new Deuce be the last Dirty hotrod? Not even close....you'll still want another non-32. But the 32 will be a part of you for ever.

Been there ... done that ...

I owned a neat little 40 Ford coupe ... paint was a 15 footer, interior was raggy but it ran and drove GREAT. I drove it everywhere. In 4 years, I drove the 32 roadster less than 1500 miles total while putting 10 to 12 thousand on the 40 coupe. I thought I would NEVER sell the 40 ... Then, I was hit down in Georgia one Saturday ... fellow ran into the rear end and right side ... BUT the repair was great. Repainted the entire coupe ... then the wife wanted to have upholstery installed. The coupe had lost it's ruff charm  ... Then I got 32 3W fever. BAD ... I had suffered with 32 coupe fever for years and finally found a 32 3W I really wanted and thought I could afford. SOLD the 40 ... to a fellow Hamber ... ( Krusty40 ) ... and He is a way better caretaker of it that I was ... and he really does the coupe justice.

I do regret selling the 40 ... to this day but would I swap the 3W for it back ?? ... no way ... :D

Do what you have to do ... A working man cannot keep them all ... or I can't

Man I feel honored by many of your comments. After working the last few hours out in the shop has not helped me with my decison at all. I want the 32 till I go out to the shop and see the 38. I have got to got let Mr Deiken and his wife see it and ride in it before I do anything. Thanks everyone for all the post and votes. Whatever decision I make I will be happy with either and if I dont make my mind up the 38 will stay but after this year will get changed

Hatch my friend... I have a '39 deluxe coupe body, fenders and hood I'll trade you. Skip the stepping stone. I can hook you up! :)

  8. When I went to the GNRS and saw all the historical 32's, it made quite an impression on me. The history part was impressive. Then I saw the 38 that Cole Foster had a hand in building. WOW. I know it is a custom and yours is a rod but that was perfect. On the other hand, I dig what you did with yours. I like to have what isn't as common. If the deuce has history, get it. If it doesn't, I wouldn't. That's just me. If it's a money thing, with the 32 you can't loose. Good luck.

It is simple Ergonomics...which car is more comfortable to sit in for 2 or 3 hours blowin down the highway. The older ya get the more aches and pains cramped quarters will give ya. I had a 29 A Sedan that looked *****in but was hell on my back and ***. A coupe can make ya damn near nuts if yer a big dude. Only your chiropractor knows for sure!

    Rusty,
Like Reggie said ,you brought a old car back to life and the next owner will enjoy it along with the others that see it. Not your first build and definitely not your last . Keep building them buddy and really look forward to see the 32 being built the Dirty Style!

Built my first deuce in 72. Have had lots of 32 fords since then, it's kinds of a sickness but it feels good to be sick. I've had my 3 window for about 30 years, had 5 ch***is under it, never finished it. I still like to go into the back room of the shop and just look at it, do that almost every day I'm working. Maybe I'll finish it next year? Get the deuce, you'll never regret it.

That is just it, the guy getting it is just getting it to sell or show for awhile then sell. Not that I really care because when it is gone it is gone

If you take the Deikens are ride in it, it would be a good idea(i think anyway!) to explain to them your dilemma, and read carefully there responce. There is a lot of power in words, and your decision could rest in the words of the responce of the people you bought it from!
Just my two cents!! Have a goodin'!

Well we all have seen our share of 32 Coupes. Your 38 is a ONE of a Kind. Racing History and a very cool build. That said I guess it's your call at the end of the day. Me I'd keep the 38....

Just saw a Cadillac commercial and thought of your situation.

Tiki Barber is buying you a '32 Cadillac with his lottery winnings?

If it were just based on the looks, style, feel of the cars, I'd say keep the '38. But I'm not a Deuce sorta guy. I actually like the look of the 30-31's better.

But there is no denying the value and potential value of a '32. You'll have to find the right person to give you the money for the '38. Seems like plenty of folks have retarded money to throw at '32's.
And they don't look to be going down anytime soon. Like Elrod said, if there was a '31, '32, and the '38 in the same condition for the same money, I'd take the '32.

You know you want the '32. Just make sure that you are willing to drive it, park it, race it, etc. like you would the '38. I'm sure you'll beat on it like all of the others, so it should be a good trade for you.

I say get what you really want. ( the 32 )

Every car you have done is nice, and they seem to be reaching a higher level each time. You may get the deuce and want something different down the line, but for now it seems like that is what will make you happy.

I really think you like the build aspect as much or more as the driving part. If you don't trade the 38 now, you will down the line, and a 32 might not be up for grabs. Seize this opportunity to get another project under your belt.

Well the 38 is gonna stay in the stable for now, Like I said I dont really want to get rid of it. I have yet to fully get to enjoy it. And yes it will be at the Hamb Drags and the Day of the Drags for sure. The 32 deal fell thru this afternoon after getting everything set to go. Call it destiny once again for the 38. It just was not meant for me to get rid of it, Will it ever be a 32? No but a 32 will never be it either. Either way I will continue to love it the best I can. Will it change, probably not for now, but I got to do some upgrades to get to 100mph in th 1/4. So back to work in the shop and thanks for all the replies. Some of the posts were very surprising and i am humbled by some of your remarks in a great way. thanks again

    fate is a curious thing....

Don't be sad, the fire for a 32 is still burning AND you get to keep the 38. The right deal will come along.
