This engine was donated to the museum (Eastern Museum of Motor Racing) & we're trying to figure out what it is...any guesses?
It looks to me like a V8-60 Ford home-built marine conversion with the exhaust punched up through the top deck and those funky manifolds with the huge exit holes. Probably something used in a small hydroplane racer.
Looks home made. The cylinder configuration throws me. Caddy, Olds and Pre Ford Lincolns had similar exhaust set up.
Like****us said, it has lots of V8-60 parts on it but it isn't from a Ford car. Could be marine, industrial or.............
I looked through all my early literature, couldn't find anything. I'd guess it was something made by Robert Roof or Pop Green.
My guess : Ford v8-60 prototype engine that went astray .. Smells WWII .. Easy Maintenanse might be the idea behind the cylinders separated from the engine block ( in pairs ) .. Klaz
Is that a Ford head, will a stock V8-60 head fit on the twin blocks? Crankcase looks to be aluminum, what size 60 crank did they use? Just noticed the carbs, are they set on an angle, or are the flanges on the manifold on an aggle to the block, if so it is a marine engine for sure.
Yes it must be a home built Hydro race engine using V8-60 internals. The Cad/tank motor guys need some perspective.
Hi Larry, Neat engine, Home built for sure, looks to be marine or have a marine angled intake. My guess is some one was a pretty creative person and tried to use a design from another engine to make a big bore 60 hp. Check out the size of the pistons, almost like 221 V8 size. This looks like a 37 Tin can block trimmed at the base panel seam and the cylinders added. Measure the piston bore 60's are 2.60 and v8s are 3.062. Hook up the garden hose Time to fire it up.
Thanks for everyone taking the time to pass on their ideas. It came to the museum via a now defunct racing group/club. I'll pass the info on to Lynn Paxton & you can see this thing on display when you come to the Jalopy Showdown in May!
