I got about as good results with one as I ever got out of my old Binks. I got similar results with the cheap gun that came with a Sears compressor.
Note I didn't say "great" or even "good" results, just "similar".

  2. This is true to a point. However as posted earlier in this thread, there are some serious differences in the way guns are made & the materials they are made out of. That is why I would recommend the Black Widow for guys who only shoot from time to time. Also as posted previously it is an inexpensive copy of a really great Sata gun. Hell maybe HF made a deal with Sata to make it without the name & let them sell it! Just like the WallyWorld's "Great Value" brand.

I agree. The quality of the machine work in terms of the air passages and whatnot are critical to what kind of pattern you're going to get.

I'm sure that a talented painter and experienced body and paint guy can do a really quality job with marginal tools. But for a hack like me, I need all the help I can get and don't need to be fighting my equipment on top of the job itself.

Respect your opinion very much, so please don't take this the wrong way. I have to agree with some of the guys that for my level of talent (NONE), a cheap HF gun does just fine for primer and stuff. I have an older but new Devilbis that I keep saving for when I want to try a better job. I think the thing is that many of us out here are not trying to put show quality paint on our cars. We don't buy the top of the line exhoribitant cost paints, but settle for lesser known stuff. Personally, the projects I'm building will probably have single stage paint without lots of gloss. I painted my son's extended cab pickup a few years ago (white) and he got lots of compliments......and he liked it. What I'm trying to say is that I think daily driver quality can be done with lower priced guns and paint and mediocre talent .....and thats fine for my needs.
I am in awe of professionals like you who can do fantastic work, but I don't think even an expensive gun would change my results that much.:)

  5. @ekimneirbo I understand completely & am taking your comments exactly as intended!

You say you have a Devilbis that you keep for special jobs...That brings up something else I had on my mind. Devilbis has a lower priced line called "Finish Line" that perform very well for a lower price. I have one of the original Finish Line FL1 guns that were one of the 1st made when the industry went to HVLP! Make no mistake...I went kicking & screaming into the HVLP age & it took my paint rep handing me this gun & saying....Use it for a month & if you like it, pay me for it! I have painted close to 100 cars with that particular gun! LOL

For gentlemen like you that will paint a few cars, but are not going to do it professionally...That Black Widow gun can be had on sale for $175.00 or so. If you can afford to lay out that much, I think if you keep it clean, it will last forever Especially since I believe the parts are interchangeable with the Sata gun.

To bad we are not closer together....I would love to have you come over & play with a couple of different guns, just for "Shits & Giggles!

    God Bless

  6. Just bought another purple one $10.
I have 3. 2 still new in the box. For spraying junk around the shop, that price is hard to beat.
For students at school, dropping a $10 gun compared to the other ones we have is a no brainer.
A fiend uses the black widow. Does a good job.
my favorite “economy” gun is the AirGunsa by Iwata. $140-160

I'd love to take you up on that. If you have a small job you plan to do sometime, maybe I can come and watch. The gun I have was bought quite a while back, when an expensive gun was $200-$300. I'm not above buying a better gun if I know how to use it somewhat.

I guess my training is different than some. I went to a government ran automotive paint & body school. We were taught to spray primer from 2.0 and 2.5 tip paint guns. (Mind you this was 30 plus years ago.) I think the purple gun is 1.4 tip. I'm not saying I have never shot primer from a purple gun but it was to cover bare metal for the evening or the weekend. I suppose the thought was hose it on block sand it off.
Positive comments or corrections are welcomed.

  9. Yes Sir!

That gun should do everything you would ever need when it comes to color or clear, because of the tip selection. It is a good gun that was just made quite a while back!

You cannot shoot high build primer with those smaller tips, but honestly most of us that paint a lot don't ever use our good guns for primer anyway. The Tamco or Orion high build primers I use call for a 2.0-2.5 tip. I tried using a 1.8 in a pinch but had to reduce it a bit which kind of negates some of the build! You can shoot sealer & epoxy primers with the smaller tips as they are not meant for build.

I bought a cheap gun off Amazon($39.00-49.00 I believe) after reading several good reviews on one of my paint forums strictly for my high build primers with a 2.3 tip. It works great for that, but it has no name on it & I can't remember what it was called in the ad so I cannot even tell others to buy it! LOL

    God bless

    I used to over-reduce DP-90 and shoot it thru a touch-up gun.
Perfect texture?color on suspension and engine compartments. Then they took the lead out. DP-90LF sucks.
