What is the best metalflake available today?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by VisionInvisible, Apr 2, 2010.

  1. Hello. I am new here but I have been around cars a really long time.

I finally found one question that I can not find the answer to here on h.a.m.b.

There are a lot of questions about how to spray metal flake but I could not find a real discussion on what is the best flake - the REAL STUFF?

I have been wanting to do some flake on my 66 Cadillac roof. My brother is a painter by trade so he will handle the spraying.

My question is WHAT IS THE BEST FLAKE? IS THE MODERN STUFF AS GOOD or BETTER than the old stuff? Who still makes the old stuff?

I have seen a lot of the Ed Roth jars on the internet and at car shows. That seems to be the most popular and the one that is easiest to find but is it as good as the stuff that people used in the 1960 and 1970s?

I found something online that mentioned old GLOBAL (GLOBELS) something like that. The description sounded like it was the real deal old timey stuff.

So what is the best flake to use?

Are there any original metalflake makers/sellers that are still around?

I'm not a painter and I have no reason to think that I know anything about flake. I do know that Roth is the closest thing I have found to what I want in a flake. Real big Bass Boat sparkle.

  3. Ive heard but I might be wrong.... that most metalflakes r pretty much the same. The only difference I think is the brilliance of them. I know that lil daddy roth flakes r around 15 bucks a jar and House of Kolor is around 50. Ive tried both. Cant tell the difference.

  4. I am no professional but I use tcpglobal good prices and there flake is way better than roth flake

I used to repair boats and think you can go to any store that sells boat gel supplies and buy REAL bass boat flake in a rainbow of colors.

The Opel looks great. Not that I did anything to help with the question.

I'll search but maybe some more info on the process on the Opel would be great as I'm getting ready to flake some of my interior and that looks pretty much spot on for what I'm looking for. (Great looks and easy) LOL

I do believe most of the actual flake, like pearl comes from only a few manufactures.. that being said i use HOK and Xotic brands. And i do believe you get what you pay for. Materials are a small cost relative to the cost of the labor in a first class paint job.

  11. What kind of flake did you use and where did you get it?

Crushed Glass is a pretty rare thing these days is it not? Where did you get that?

Can you still purchase this Glowble flake?

I wonder if this flake is actually better than the newer products on the market? Sometime modern technology is can produce better products

This is a stupid question. Is BASS BOAT FLAKE a brand of flake?

Look for paint with pearls on the web, they have the crushed glass, I do believe. Do you have to color sand in between color while doing the flake and final clear?

I've tried the Roth flake and wasn't impressed at all

  15. If I hang onto my wagon, I plan on shooting the roof in Lime Green flakes with a white base. Got a hood and a trunk lid to practice on, once I get all of the materials together. Should be fun!!

I use only HOK for all my kustom effects. From what I've heard, other colored flakes are only colored on the 2 flat sides while the edges are silver. When the flakes stand on edge you can see the silver and if your using colored flake with no candy over it, it will really show up. HOK flakes are colored on all sides, I can't say anything about other flakes as I don't use them.

im with slowandlow63. I have run into this problem with flake brands other than house of kolor. Old school flake and roth flake will have a "stray silver" edge if it doesnt lay flat. hok seems to have more brilliance.

I used roth juicy pink on the roof of my 51 and put 13 coats on and I think its great, I sprayed it last year and has held up great through a new york winter and summer, I did clear it w HOK though I think that there clear is rock solid, and I used kustom shoppe mid coat clear to lay it down

no you cant sand between flake coats because you will sand the flake.the only thing you can sand is the clear after a couple of coats.then if you want to build it up more you can put acouple more coats of clear on it.

I re-did my speedboat last year using TCP Global's standard .015 flake in apple red on a black base and had good results. Awesome shine, consistent size, both sides and edges had color without any silver edges. One thing that was not as advertised was the shape of the flake. Their site shows a pentagon shape, but all three colors that I have bought from them came through as round flake.

Flowed fairly well using tcp's 2.5mm gun with four heaping tablespoons per mixed quart of PPG dbc500 mid coat clear. Had to blow air back through the fluid needle only a few times to unstuck the traffic jam of flake. Put down three heavy coats of topcoat clear, and let it sit a few days. Wet sanded with 400, and re-cleared.

Came out great, especially for my first flake job. I'll be doing my second flake job in the next couple of weeks.
Doing a .015 jet black flake to .015 lime green flake fade on my friend's 24' poontoon boat.

My experience in shooting flake is to use a silver or gold flake and then spray a candy over it. This can be difficult to the point of getting the same consistency candy everywhere without zebra striping the car. If you're going with a colored flake, be careful when wetsanding cause if you nick the flakes that didn't lay flat, they will appear as little silver specks because the color will have been sanded from the flake. Silver shows up the most brilliant and then gold. If you go with silver or gold, then all you have to decide is candy. Here is and old chip chart I have for examples of flake.

I forgot to state that I've only used HOK silver flake, I like it in that it doesn't look like Judy Garland should be trying to steal it and wear in an attempt to get back home to the Midwest. Sorry, but I've no pictures.

I would also ask this guy what he uses. It looks FANTASTIC!!! :

I learned something about Roth Flake. A friend of mine used it on his roof. It was tangerine flake over a tangerine base and cleared. The flake lost its color and turned pink after only a few years. Just something to think about.

I used the flake from www.paintwithpearl.com like American Opel did. That .004" Flake has huge sparkle and lays really nice on sharp edges and corners. I will definatly be using more in the future. Just use a good quality intercoat clear and top coat.

Could you please post bigger pics of your car?
    Thanks.

  29. Need to know more about intercoat clear and using it when spraying flake. I have since tried spraying test panels with only regular clear.

Tell me more about the reason for using this intercoat stuff?
