In a kustom job, you usually have many layers of paint counting primer etc. Too much build and you run the risk of the entire job cracking and falling apart. The intercoat is way thinner than topcoat clear and helps to keep the build down. It also flashes faster so it will help suspend the flake better and not allow it all to settle once on the car.
