If you could have any V8 engine in your HotRod, What would it be?

For some strange reason, i have always loved the look of 348's and 409's since i was a little kid.

There's something about the scalloped valve covers on em..
I just think there cool looking.

I have both in the garage now, and the 409 is slated to go in my '32 5 window 'project'.

Tom McMullin had a Cammer Ford in his Roadster in the 60's.

 

For looks you canlt beat a dressed first gen Olds Rocket

 

If I could have any engine in my rod it would be the Ford 427 SOHC "Cammer" with dual quads!! It may not be as nostalgic as some of the others but damn it's an awesome engine!! But that Autolite inline carb is sweet too!

My second choice would be the Ford Boss 429 "shotgun". Now that's a Hemi!!

Ha! I think they got around 12 gallons per mile, but you know me, ever the impractical; tunnel rammed, magneto fed 307 in a '47 Jeep, can't even see over the aircleaners much less the airboat headers with tractor flappers pokin' straight up.

For the most part, your right..
But there's a little something you can do with a 409 to make it 'run' just a little better.

Somewhere around here i have all the info on a stroker 409.
The basics are a 454 crank, 9.5 compression with a relatively mild hyd cam, and dual quads and hi-perf heads.
(Granted, there's a little more to it)
I think it comes to around 477 cu in.
Made over 500 ft lbs of torque on pump gas..

This is what i plan on doing with my 409.

Pretty wild. The exhaust manifolds actually came out of the top of the block between the heads and intake. Most of the manifolds were even made of ceramic! (The ones I have seen were kind of a dark greenish-blue color, and log-shaped.) Other than that, they just looked like a big Ford flathead. They weighed about a zillion pounds, too. We pulled one out of a 41 Caddy, and the engine hoist was making all kinds of grunts and groans. The same hoist didn't even break a sweat on Chevy big blocks!

I am partial to the 348-409s as well, got a 348 going in my truck someday...
Well dressed flatties are sharp too.... But Im a buick man at heart.

 

most any early American overhead can be made to look awsome

but I have always had a thing for the hemi motors

prolly because of their drag strip reputation,

and my first car had a 354 in it.

a blown 354 done 1956 gas style would be pretty bitchen

but a mid sixties cross ram 426 in factory race trim would be ok too.

PakRat, my pal Art is a 409 guru, I know of what you speak. Crazy shit! Mine happen to be a 348 but did you know you can punch most of those out to 409?

 

I heard that myself, i think the biggest problem with doing it is the variations in cyl wall thickness..
The're not all that uniform in the castings..in fact from what i've heard, they kinda suck.

That'd be "IT" for me!

Drj, I'm going to challenge you on the McMullen roadster. I know Tom ran a big block (427) Ford in the roadster but never heard of him running a Cammer. Do you have any pictures?
I have a wonderful recipe for CROW that i'll be willing to partake of if you're right.

SOOOO many great engines to choose from. i LOVE those "W" motors, have since i was 17, but right now i think a properly dressed big cube NAILHEAD with six dueces would be the shiznit!!!
