Technical What is the easiest way to get a title?

I’m going to jump in again, but before I do ,I want to remind everyone that every state has different laws! Being a Fireman, I had a lot of cop friends. The very first thing I always did when I bought a car, any car, was call one of my cop friends and have him run the vin and the tag to see if it was stolen or reported stolen. Yes, tag and vin. There’s a reason for that, but too long to tell now.
Once I have determined the vehicle is not stolen, I proceed to acquire a title in the way the situation merits. You have the title battle half won, making sure it is not a stolen vehicle. That way you have a very good probability that no one is going to come claiming that’s your car is their car. Not a guarantee , though. No way is perfect, there are possible pitfalls in every title transactions. Believe me, I know, lol !

States want your tax money. Figure out the process for the state your in in do it that way. Too many times we try to get cute and it ends up costing us more time and money than if we had just used the correct process to start out with!

 

That is still not 100%. In the event a vehicle is stolen and has not yet been reported stolen then it will not come up as stolen. There are a bunch of scenarios where a not yet reported stolen car is for sale.

Cars without titles are prime for this sort of crime. People buy them as "parts" vehicles all the time and have no history on them. No driveway sale is 100% but one should take all the precautions available. The no-title vehicles are really dangerous. If you insist on buying one then do the registration steps before you put any money into the build.

And, yes, do what you need to do to ensure that the title produced is for the vehicle you are buying. If it does not match the frame, engine, ID plate, etc., you have purchased a parts car and have a worthless piece of paper. Even if it means taking it apart!

 

All this, and other threads, really reinforces the maxim that you only by cars with clean titles. If yo do get a car without a clear title, do whatever is necessary to title the car before you start sinking time and money into it. Simple concept, difficult practice.

 

I agree! Hence the last statement in my post! Over the years I have seen a lot! Not everything, mind you, but some real crazy things when it comes to titles, vins, and tags!
