My experience with the two same colors from 1958 to 1966:
    Hello,

We thought the extra coat of Blue Coral Wax on the black 1958 Impala was an extra advantage in “slickness” (also sickness) for the streamlining in the drag races. Every day, my job was to clean off the dust and other “extra” things that happen to get on the surface, before the next school day or cruising night. I was awarded the nicest paint job in my senior year.

Every other week, I was detailing the black paint with another coat of wax. It was a fanatical move, but that black paint sure was deep. We also won trophies over other 348 Impalas at Lions. So, either, it was my brother’s take off and shifting or the slick surface of the paint gave him extra milliseconds off of his E.T.

Then years later, we found out that it did not matter what shape your race car is, for the ¼ mile. Streamlining and smooth surfaces have little to none, in the effectiveness of lowering the E.T. times. It was hard work by the expert mechanics and go fast, speed parts. So, it had to be my brother’s shifting quickness and/or my fast starts to pull ahead for the wins. Back then, black was the fast color.

When we sold the black Impala, my next car was a RED, 1965 El Camino. It was not fast, but just a 125k mile total, reliable long distance cruiser over the years. The red color looked fast, but not compared to my black 348 Impala. Actually, according to the California Highway Patrol (on one traffic stop) coming home from San Jose, during a semester break: “Son, your red El Camino stood out from my overpass, on ramp, lookout spot easier than any other color. You were going fast.”

Back then, they did not have radar, but counted the car going past the center divider posts in seconds to estimate the actual speed. Not too accurate, so the actual 95 mph was written down to a “66 in a 65 max speed” moving violation. This lowering of the mph was after several minutes of a discussion at 5 am, just outside of San Luis Obispo.

It was a lively discussion about “a poor college kid with a job lined up in Long Beach” within hours of this traffic stop. (at 8 am) It was a hard sell, with the back of the El Camino stuffed with a dirt motorcycle and a a 10 ft. surfboard, plus traveling bags. That ticket cost me $20 for the one mph over the max 65 allowed in California.

  11. Legend has that no paint (bare aluminum) was fastest.

" In 1934 the international governing body of motor sport prescribed a maximum weight limit of 750 kg for Grand Prix racing cars, excluding tyres and fuel. In the spring of 1934, the Mercedes-Benz team placed its new Mercedes-Benz W25 on the scrutineering scales prior to the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, it allegedly recorded 751 kg (1,656 lb).

Racing manager Alfred Neubauer and his driver Manfred von Brauchitsch, who both later published their memoirs, claimed that they had the idea of removing all the white lead-based paint from the bodywork. The story continues that the next day the shining silver aluminium beneath was exposed and scrutineering was passed. After the 350 hp (260 kW) car of Von Brauchitsch won the race, the nickname Silver Arrow was born, according to this version."

  12. Black is the best looking color on a straight old body.
Black is also the most labor intensive color, it is a full time job to keep it looking good.
Not sure if it is the fastest or not, depends how much $ you spend on the rest of the car.

  13. Thursday is fairy's day green is the color of the day. :D

I don't have any pics but the Ol' Mans Race cars were always white. The Cobra was white with a black stripe.

On a side note, I have never been ice skating in my entire life and now my legs are pretty crippled, I'll bet it wouldn't matter what color you dressed me in to go speed skating. ;)

One morning we were all sitting around the table at the shop, and we were discussing the fastest things in the world.

The first guy, Bill-E-Bob said, "Electricity was the fastest thing he knew of." He said, "You no sooner flip the switch and the light is on! Electricity is the fastest thing on planet earth!"

So the next guy, Bob-a-Louie said, "Gravity was the fastest thing he knew of." He said, "When I get up in the morning, before I can even stand up, my feet hit the floor! Gravity is the fastest thing in the world!"

Then Bubba, not to be out done, says, "The color brown is the fastest thing I ever saw!" He said. "Before I could ever get my feet on the floor, before I could even reach the light switch, I got diarrhea and sh-t the bed!":p:D

Speaking of red... a buddy of mine told me that pure red paint, as in nothing but red pigment and the required solvent carrier is the brightest red you can get. That must be the fastest, eh? Is there a code for that? Gary

There was a kid who covered himself in graphite and his car as well. He won the National Soapbox Dirby that year. 1939?

I read about some research some psychologists did years ago about car colour and speeding tickets. They found the colours most likely to get caught in camera traps were the "aspirational" colours, black, silver, charcoal – what you might call the pinstripe-suit colours. Least likely were the bright primaries, call them the kindergarten colours perhaps, including the red of my frequently-delinquent DD.
