What is the Safest way to strip paint off a 69 pontiac grill?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 54canadianpontiac, Jan 21, 2009.

  1. I have a 69 Canadain Beaumont grill, and i want to repaint the black and gery details back to stock looks. And i have very little idea how to go about clean up pot metal cromed surfaces without damaging the plastic or marking the crome. There is also over spray on the crome from when the car was painted back in 92, so what would be the best way to remove that off the crome with out scratching it? There's barely any piting or markes on the crome, and i just want to clean it up since i'm going throw the trouble of fixing the rest of the car. But don't need to go broke while doing so...

Any help would make my day...

Is it plastic or pot metal, or a combination of both? regular old paint stripper won't hurt pot metal, but if there's plastic Easy-Off oven cleaner is probably a better choice. Try a just a little at first to make sure it won't harm the plastic.

  5. Chrome polish or very fine rubbing compound for the overspray.
Tape the chrome up good and neat for protection or take it off,
Then scotch brite pad on the plastic.
Slow & Safe, worked for me on some 66 gto grills
The paint might be tougher than the plastic its on,
