You should see what happens when people put 'em in bikes! :D

  2. I like the 4 cylinder Chevy II/Iron Duke/Mercruiser series. I have a 181 cubic inch Mercruiser out of the seventies in my '32 roadster. Went in without cutting anything, bolted to an early ford transmission using the same adapter that the Chevy V8 uses when attaching to the early Ford V8 transmission. Not worth the time to install if all you are interested in is gas mileage.

read the first post from '04 and 2.00gas doesnt sound so bad any more. i guess what thats what they want us to think. i retro fitted an '89 turbo t-bird engine and processor into my 94 ranger with a 5 speed and that was a fun little ride this would go great in an early ride that was lite but the fuwl milage wasnt all that great. fun car that was a real sleeper! it putted like a 4cyl and then that turbo would spool up and really kick in.

I have a flathead Plymouth four in my Model A (See left) no windshield. It ran 113.75 a couple of times. Not the fast car in the class. On gas.

I'm new here but I love inline engines. I read thru this entire thread and no one has mentioned my favorite. The Pontiac Super Duty 4 cylinder. Basically the racing version of the Iron Duke. They have a bunch of different cylinder heads. A couple cast iron ones, I think 3 aluminum ones and a DOHC version if you could ever find one, but they are out there. You can get all kinds of intakes as well. From a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel, Side draft, ITB FI, even a dual quad set-up. The blocks are much more robust. There are 3 basic cranks. A 2.5L, 2.7L and 3.0L but if you bore the engine out 3.3L is possible. And the beauty of this engine is taht all the parts interchange with the Duke. The engine was made to race in the Fiero In IMSA and the rules stated it had to be production based. Pontiac made it so you could get them right from the dealer. These were also used in Midget racing, In race trim they could put out around 450hp and rev to 8500rpm all day long. Here is some of my parts.

don't know if it's been mentioned, but the Triumph/MG 1300/1500 might be a good choice. I don't like four cylinders but my wife's Spitfire has one and it's alright for what it is. Anemic, but it has a good sound, always mated to a four speed, and is a simple (cheap) OHV engine... not like the Renaults or Alfas. It also looks kind of neat with the side draft Strombergs.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but what about an engine out of an 80's Porsche 944 I think the blown version had 220hp, I don't know how they did on gas or how reliable they were, but I'm sure there's some go fast goodies for them and it's something different anyways.

I like the 2.3 Fords... Even the dual plug engines... My only complaint is they use a timing belt vs. a chain...

I was thinking the other day, even just 5 years ago the thought of owning any inline 4 cylinder engine would make me cringe... Now I'm spending money in my O/T, daily driven S-10 to hop up the 2.2 that's in it... Almost 30 MPG on the highway in a vehicle that isn't very aerodynamic and still breaks 255/60/15's loose from a dead stop with an Automatic is ok by me.

Times have sure changed.... At least for me.

On my way to Vegas last Easter weekend I stopped at my favorite piss stop town, Baker, Ca and I saw 91 octane (the highest octane at most stations in California) close to $4.75 a gallon. I said to my self it will probably be well over $5.00 a gallon next year this time.......Hope I'm wrong.

Looks like this one has been dug up several times...in the last 9 years!!!

I have a 54 Dodge truck (locked up stock 4cyl) that I plan to drive 100 miles a day...everyday. My current DD is a 2002 VW TDI Jetta that gets about 45mpg(wish i could get that out of this.) My original intention was to install a Cummins 4bt diesel, but lately ive been seriously considering just dropping the truck on an s10 with a working 4cyl. and drivetrain. Perhaps then down the road I could drop in a more efficient motor. I curious if anyone knows which s10 years/models got the best mileage and which ones had the most reliable drivetrain parts?

Interesting build very similar to what I am considering.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QM41HF-qT4k&feature=share&list=PL9DC3C46DD4E8856C
