Hot Rods What is your "go to" wheel for a street brawler?

I had 235-70-15 on the back of my 35 it had 2 in lowering blocks in rear 225-70-14s up front w 2 inch drop axle .it has a '68 327, 60 over ,202 heads and a 375 hp factory cam ,650 double pumper .it rolled !

 

You can't see much of it, but here is dad's 15x10 small window Halibrands, this has Pro Trac 50 series tires on it. He bibbed the fenders back in the day. This pic was taken about 1978ish.

That's what's on my 57 and it's not enough tire to intimidate anyone into thinking it's any kind of brawler.
Jack it up or radius the fenders to get a tire to hang outside of them, you've got an image to uphold here. Lol

 

Depends on the car. Id like chrome slots on a early T roadster. But not as much on a 32 roadster. In which I'd rather prefer ET III wheels. One of many examples...

 

Steel wheels painted body color with or without dog dish caps or aluminum slots.

trucks? Yeah, slots work on them. And gotta fill up the rear wheelwell.

This one was kind of fast 40+ years ago, but only compared to normal cars.

 

A bit more than a ton & a 1/2 of fun! I'm working on that.

 

I like the ET 5 spokes . . .


Also something to be said for mismatched . . .

 

Yea. Mismatched to me gives a rowdy kind of outlaw look.

When you just bought your first hot rod, money was well spent. But, the look of a orangish, red sedan delivery just did not have the complete look with blackwalls, black rims and small center hubcaps. So, I borrowed some money and bought a set of beauty trim rings at the Ford Parts Obsolete near our Westside of Long Beach house.

Now, the look, as simple as it was, looked complete. Minimal money spent and the trim rings gave the sealed look of a nice hot rod. At least, it did for me. Dad’s and mom’s did not like the look of the sedan delivery when it rolled up to the curb for a visit or to pick up their daughter for a nice dinner/movie. Ha… even though, it now looked like a nice hot rod, it reminded those parents that it was for delivering milk or repairing the TV or plumbing. But, there were other connotations of the empty cave in the back that was presumed the main concern. Wow !

A street brawler in looks only. But, if the 348 was still in the sedan delivery when I purchased it, it would have been the "top drawer level" everywhere. It would have given the 58 Impala plenty of competition. But, as it stood, it was the underpowered flathead motor that made it the top street brawler of the lower echelon of hot rod/custom cars on the Cherry Avenue Drags location. Ha!

When we wanted to have a great chuckle, a 51 Pontiac sedan, the 54 Chevy Bel Air and the 62 Chevy 2 Nova and the Flathead Sedan Delivery were all in the competition class, but a lot of levels down the ladder.

So, after we got married, my wife and I chose a project to get ready for our next level hot rod adventure. A 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery. Yes, another sedan delivery. This one already had the power, but it was a long term project. It looked nice, but definitely needed some new parts and a complete re-do for safety/long term reliability.

It took several months of work, and then had to ask an expert in the field to get things right with the set up the sedan delivery had. Eventually, it became a one of a kind, cool hot rod for both of us and the only one in So Cal circles. On the outside, it looked like a hot rod. Looks were deceiving...

But, for some reason the drive train, suspension, brakes, shocks and rods all needed some serious adjustment, repair or removal with new items in the original place. The new tires + tire shaving + wheel alignment after all of the new products were installed made the sedan delivery track straight and drive like it was on rails on any type of road. Even the ignition + wiring needed some servicing and replacement.

Again, the same style of small center hubcaps and a set of outside beauty trim rings were the "look of the day..." For the next 6 "trouble free" cruising years, all over So Cal places, even into the local mountains. YRMV

Chrome steelies with M&H Racemasters out back and American Torque Thrust “originals” aka straight spoke with skinny Pro Trac up front for me with the polished to keep the shine theme started on the rear wheels and a nod to Christmans white Comet A FX car

Thinking about black steels out back with some “aged” cast Americans up front or an “aged” full set of Americans

 

What’s the treatment on these wheels?

Those are my American pointy spoke magnesium s. I glass beaded that set, and just rub them down with WD40 ; if the dreaded white furies start to appear.

Other than the fact that I'm sure the wheels are OT, I have a question for you street brawlers. I'm picking up a set of used 26X9 15 inch Hoosier slicks. Is it normal to screw the rim to the sidewall? It's been a lot of years since I've ran slicks on anything. I know we screwed tires on off road rigs before bead locks became popular just don't know if that is ok on a drag tire.

 

Adhesive is used these days.

There are a lot of wheels that can be used will have an "aggressive" .........street brawler look, but I think the key to making it look that way is the tire that accompanies it. Its going to need to be large and wide. I'd decide how big and how wide you can accomodate and then decide which rims can work with them. While I generally like a tire to fit within the confines of a fender, some of the trucks look just fine with a little bit of tire outside the fender line. IMHO

I have heard of others doing this too. I haven’t really paid attention to whether my 28x11.5 slicks are moving on the wheels or not with no screws.

 

I go by the thought that if you run slicks with tubes you need to screw the wheel to tire if no tube you can run without.
I don't run tubes.
