I hear you. I've been thinking about that too. The real question for me is will the local track which is now very NHRA let me run 10 or slower if I don't meet their FED guidelines.
You know if I had the choice of owning an FED and running it once a year at the HAMB drags or not having the FED.................I would be happy with once a year!
Kerry, I am having a machine shop make me the front torsion bars for my dragmaster. The material is 4140 stock, 3/4'' Diameter. Splined , axle arm splined and the end of the torsion is threaded to hold on the arm. We have it figured out now. I am lucky to have the Dragmaster to take apart and look at. Interested in a set p.m me. What I said about NHRA is how I feel for cars like mine. But if you wanted to build a crazy amount of horse power and run the car a quarter mile all out; build it safe per NHRA specs to stay alive. Conders rails should be the way all legal cars should look. The modern front engine dragsters with the "gutter and down spout" bodies. And stupid looking cages do nothing for me. But Conders NHRA legal rails are things of pure beauty. Everyone that builds a legal car should take note. As to the likes of Ch***is Research cars and Dragmasters and all other late 50s and early 60s diggers. Some can be made to be legal and not look stupid. I dont think that you can build a K-88 car NHRA legal and still retain the "look". Those early cars , not just K-88s; but cars of like design are what they are. Build one with a carbed flattie and have fun. If you really like those style cars and want to race it, build it and look for a track that will let you run. It isnt that hard around here, I dont know about the rest of the country. You figure a car like that isnt super fast , should be a blast. If you want to run it safely, just dont build a over powerful motor. And have fun.
QUOTE: CONDER Lots of guys ran carburated Dragmasters back then and had a BALL, then as they learned ran faster and faster until they were Fuel legends...That's a HELL of a LOT smarter than getting a bunch of people together and building some balls out rail with thousands of horsepower, and then jumping in it with no experience! Now THAT'S !@#$in' NUTS..... END QUOTE Yeah I know a guy in Northern California doing that right now!! But he is a crazy ****in biker type , so things should be just fine.
Wow, tough crowd. I'm gonna flat out call ******** on building a modern nostalgia FED and having to be a millionaire. You absolutely CAN build one on a shoestring budget, it may take several years. And no doubt you won't set any records when it's all said and done, but I guaran-damn-tee you're gonna have some fun doing it and learn a heck of a alot in the process. Having money sure will speed up the process, but it ain't everything. Then again what the heck do I know - I drive a Rambler.
