Model A's typically have lots of room under the floor directly under the p***enger seat. Here's a battery box I built from some s**** bed frame.

I wouldn't mount a battery in the p***enger compartment or on the firewall (inside or out); you'll need all the room available in those areas for other components, ie wiring, coil, heater and hoses, etc. Plus, batteries are always better hidden. Under the p***enger seat is wide open and you can run a big, and cheap, battery without paying through the **** for one of those street rodder special batteries.

I forgot to mention that mine has no fenders/running board, that's why a normal size battery is a bit tricky if I decide to put it under the floor, it woudn't be hidden...

If I was running fenders that would be the right place.

  5. I can verify that Interstate and Sears batteries are the same.

Back in the early 80's I was a mechanic for Sears. We got a load of new batteries and I went into our battery room to take inventory. When I opened the door everything was green. I ask my manager if Sears changed the color of their batteries. We went back to the battery room together and that's when we both noticed that they were all Interstate batteries. The dumb*** delivery driver unloaded the wrong batteries.

I've got a $50 Sears battery in mine, mounted in my first official toolbox. One thing you should be aware of is proper ventilation. You can see the two large holes on the side of the tool box, which is now covered with a louvered plate to keep the rain out.

I have been running Honda batteries. Group 51 can be bought anywhere batteries are sold for about $60-70. They are small and it has no problem starting a stock small block chevy. As long as you don't have a ton of compression, you should not have a problem with one. Hell my coupe starts better than my 03 gmc sierra.

Optimas USED to be THE battery to get. 10 years ago, they were a premium battery that would last dang near forever. over the last couple years though, Optima's are JUNK. their build quality has gone to **** since they moved their operation to mexico. i cant tell you how many i have seen fail, and personally i have had 3 fail in the last 2 years.

I personally like interstate, or odessy's.. then again, now that AGM' batteries are getting cheaper (you can get them now at vatozone or whathaveyou), they have become my new favorite over wetcell's.

AGM's are TOUGH batteries. same technology that an optima has, but not paying for a name. take your pick- they all will die sooner than later. me? i normally get the cheapest with the longest free warranty. pro-rate is ok, but sure beats forkin out cash.
