What kind of engine is this?

  1. I like the entire wheel, though the rims are nice

  2. A tractor engine in a rat rod, but no tractor grill? Probably unintentional irony.

I miss the old HAMB. sigh...

  3. Interesting engine choice - bet it has a ton of torque. I would like to see it in something a bit less r*t r*d and make more of the fact that it doesn't need a radiator.

pretty funny this comes up after the "cars you wouldnt want to be seen in" thread..
fake spindle mounts, huge wheel base, shitty fab work, a diesel engine, .......

The engine alone is pretty cool imo.

Yes, and practical: this rod has a three-point hitch.

About 20 years ago I worked for a diesel engine dealer who picked up Deutz air and water-cooled engines as a side line. One of the bad features on this air cooled engine is that the belt tensioner has a 2 wire limit switch - if it looses a belt it usually takes out the wires and the engine will keep running until it melts down.

One other different feature - to set up piston to cylinder head clearance you need to lay a short piece of "lead" wire or solder across the piston crown and rotate the engine by hand to have the piston "smash" it - remove the head and mike it - and then remove the cylinder liner and add or remove shims under the liner to get the required clearance.

Most of these engines are used in industrial applications such as farming, welding machines, pumps and in mines - first and only time to see one in a car.

All this knowledge on this engine and the one main thing about it has been totally missed!
    Its bloody UGLY!

    Doc.

  10. winner, air cooled and they will run under a load in a stationary position all day, serious workhorse, used in tons of air compressors and used to power hydraulic systems etc etc

edit, just in case it hasnt been said yet, its german, heavy, loud, blah blah blah

So, it must be good because the Germans always make the best shit. Just go ask you local BMW tech.

At one time many of the buses in Athens in Greece had Deutz V8s in them, made a lovely noise leaving bus-stops.

Awful car, I agree, but the engine has potential. It just needs to be turbocharged to within an inch of its life. Like all diesels do.

Only if you were kind enough to set it one fire first. What a pile, its amazing how bad some peoples taste is and what passes for a "Hot Rod" in their minds.

So...cool running, reliable, high compression, decent torque, modest horsepower, good fuel economy.

What is it, some kinda German tractor engine?

Why the hell would anybody want to put one in a truck?

I saw it at the Hunnert Car Pile Up, so it must be a traditional Hot Rod engine...

  18. Why is this even on here? it's Not A HOT ROD, It certainly isn't traditional and it's powered by an industrial motor that has no business being in a Hot Rod, if it were one.
