    Hello,

It comes in phases. As a preteen, it was Oldsmobile, since that was what I helped my brother maintain the cruiser.
upload_2023-7-28_3-25-50.png I did just about everything I could do, just so I could get a ride to where I wanted and to arrive in a cool teenage cruiser/hot rod. Wax detail everything, rotate tires, install Moon discs, before that paint all steel wheels various colors, etc. My brother found out that he could get me to do any form of maintenance, including changing oil, spark plugs, etc. just so he would have to take me where I wanted to go, as per parents requests.
    upload_2023-7-28_3-30-34.png
Then when my brother got a new 58 black Impala, now, everything switched over to Chevrolet stuff. All of the extra Oldsmobile stuff went to our friend, who bought it. He lived around the corner and we always saw it at our house weekly when he came to visit. But, now, it was all Chevrolet parts and accessories.

After several years of drag racing the Impala at Lion's Dragstrip, there were more specific duties I had to perform to still get my ride to a particular event or place. This new car got a weekly exchange of a rear third member from 4:11 Positraction to 4:56, just so we could be competitive at the weekly races. It more than paid for itself...

We finally decided to build a 1940 Willys Coupe, but the power was Chevrolet. Carbs at first and then a 671+carbs SBC for the final act. As our direction changed, now I was the official owner of the 58 Impala. My friends all owned Chevy sedans and with that in mind, we all became Chevrolet parts/accessories and mechanics. Well, three of us were the go to guys for Chevrolet repairs, builds and customizations.
    upload_2023-7-28_3-41-13.jpeg
Then a Flathead 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery popped up, now it was the cruising hot rod and almost full time beach road trip/camping sedan delivery. No one else wanted to take their cars loaded with surfboards and beach stuff. We did for a while, just to go hang out with the girls who liked the beach areas. But, as the years rolled on, the number of my high school hot rod friends did not continue surfing.

During this time, various “Surf Station Wagons” popped up in my surfing friends. Most were Chevrolets. I had the only Ford Sedan Delivery and any Ford vs Chevy conversation/bantering was a no gamer.

upload_2023-7-28_3-43-59.png This guy kept the Chevrolet theme going for the next 12 years of the absolute most fun road trips and fun at 125k miles of reliable driving without any problems...

Our time in hot rods, customs, motorcycles and photography from 1956-76, Chevrolet was accepted as reliable and ahead of the overall game of cars. (Harley for motorcycles) But, my wife and I had other ideas. Gas mileage turned to smaller cars not USA made. So, the quality of the American cars started going down hill as an overall vehicle and we went our separate ways.

The only way to stay involved with hot rods was an SBC powered sedan delivery project. My wife was a happy camper (pun intended) and it was one of the most enjoyable road worthy cars we fiddled with from a project stage to drivability all over So Cal.
    upload_2023-7-28_3-49-16.png
But, by 1976, it no longer fit our family lifestyle and that too, went to a younger couple for their first hot rod. So, did the Harley Sportster. They were made just for someone like those young couples to start their adventures.

Now, there is no “choice” as to what group we would be. My wife likes 40 Ford convertibles, but a nice 65 Chevy Chevelle Station Wagon would fit our needs much better. During the time our granddaughter was growing up, we came close to getting a 1940 Ford SBC Sedan, although her parents were having a fit about reliability and safety for their daughter vs. a larger modern SUV with plenty of crash protection.

These days our daily drivers are paid for, enjoyable for reliability, and for older folks, satisfying. We do see old hot rods and cool cruisers on the roads where we always drive. They all look appealing to us. It must be that most are somewhat different and colorful, whereas, the daily drivers we see most every day are all grey, black, white and all look the same, so to speak.

Hot rods are now in their own class, whether it is Ford or Chevy or even a Plymouth station wagon or Black Cherry painted Dodge pickup truck. We are still “one of them!” YRMV

  3. You like V8s they're pretty foreign.:D

I cut my the palm of hand (to the bone tried hard to cut my thumb off) very badly at work several years ago, I am standing there hold a rag on my hand waiting for the purchasing manager to take me to the E.R.

She came rolling up with her car, I said " I am not riding to the hospital in a Honda, please get the shop truck."

My boss told me very bluntly to get in the car, but I wasn't going to ride in a foreign car.

Always a Chevy guy growing up. The only Fords I liked (somewhat modern post war) were 55/6 pickups. Thought all Mopars were ugly as sin except the Cuda.

25 or so years later, dang, I even like the looks of a ‘58 ford PU, etc.

Now, can’t think of anything I dislike, especially if it’s older than I am.

On one of my trips to California, the rental car people handed me the keys to a Toyota Camry, I promptly gave them back and said, No thanks I want an American car. They gave me a Chevy Malibu....

Blue oval for me. I’ve had 40 or more of them and most have been pretty good automobiles….except the Pinto.

I got bit pretty bad on my brand new 1971 Vega GT. After one year I could see all the metal rusting. Unloaded it at a perfect time during the gas crisis.

  10. I am a Chevy engine guy, lol. I like most classic cars. Kinda comes with the territory when you like customs since I like mixing and matching parts from all kinds of cars to make something. I do prefer to own a Chevy as a base to start with and all my o/t stuff is Chevy.

I'm generally a GM guy, but I like unique old iron. Basically anything with an engine and some form of traction device can attract my attention. I like GM engines, but my current tuning issues might turn me into a fire guy soon. :p

Wow. I've owned and driven Porsches, Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Honda. I buy, build and drive quality automobiles. From the 80's through part of the 90's, there were some really bad American made cars and i drove some of them.

Despite that, i owned Suburbans and Astro vans. I am going to buy what I want, regardless of origin. Hell, there is probably more U.S. content in a Honda that comes from Maryville than there is in some "U.S." cars. YMMV and that is your prerogative but there is no fully American made car any more and hasn't been for decades.

Anything that is cool or interesting I like. I cut my teeth on Chevy musclecars but have strayed here and there. SHO, Omni, Demon, vans. I am currently on an early Ford kick. So, I'm an everything guy I guess. Hell, I think Dodge Omnis are cool!!

To this I'll add that it's a permanent condition! Saw an ad for a part for sale. Dude said he was getting out of the hot rod life. Shocked me, not even something I knew could actually happen. People have their reasons, for sure though.

I'm a fkn mess. Heavy old OG? Probably a 41 Packard 160. Actually have one but that's another story. Kool? Nothing beats a Ford V8 of some kind, mild or wild, as long as it's done well and not confused with a ton of visible new shit. 60s? Pretty much all GM, 65 and older nearly any. Who doesn't love a 61 (___________) bubble top? 65 GTO. Got one of those too. Top shelf OG? 34 Packard, but that would take a lotta stepping stones these days. Love the "wartime" cars from about 39 thru 47. Yeah there's some orphan who cares shit in there but most are just nice. 41 Dodge Luxury Liner business coupe. Too kool for school. Never forget to pay your props to a Model A Ford. How can anyone disapprove of the full timing retard idle? See? I'm a fkn mess!!

I’m a Ford guy, I’ve always had great luck with them.. I would however kill for a 40/41 Willy’s gasser, I’ve always loved those.. I do respect all early iron though..

I love Hemis, but the that doesn't mean I am a Mopar or no car guy. I suppose I am a "variety is the spice of life" guy. I have no brand loyalty. There are 10 different brands in my 27 car collection. I gravitate towards cars that are less common, are a challenge to aquire, have a high level of styling, proportion, engineering, performance, or a great history or story. I have a soft spot for survivors too. When I look over a car, either I like it or I don't.
