What kid of mufflers are you using on your I6? I got a 235 bored .60 over with a cam and duel exhaust. Got the fenton headers. I was curous what people are reccomending to use and also what people are using. I want loud, and i want it to sound good at idle and angry in the top end. I was thinking glass packs, but i wanted to know what you think i shoudl use. -Andrew
I have a 235 with Fentons down at the exhaust shop as I write this gettin 1 1/2" pipe duals welded up with no mufflers, just good ol' straight pipes. I'm going to pick it up in an hour... I'll give you the verdict after that. If it's too much, I'm gonna go with the smallest glass-packs I can find up as close to the headers as possible. We'll see... I'm hoping for plenty of RRRRAAAPPP!
nothing, and i mean NOTHING sounds as correct as a set of smithys.... MAN do i miss mine on my flatty plymouth 6 with split headers... soooo right
I got fentons on my 235 with 8" glasspacks and 1 1/2" pipe. The pipes go their own way down each side right around the bellhousing, then the glasspacks are welded in BACKWARDS, almost under my front seat. Pipes run back from there, up over the axle, then into some LA pipes (or bellflowers). Love the sound, good and throaty at idle, then pretty mean and loud on acceleration. Also gives the nice "pop and rap" when downshifting or deccelerating. Oh yeah, it's a 3 speed. Erron
When I put my first '53 together, I used the longest Walker glasspacks I could get, 2" I.D. in and out. I exited the tailpipes straight out beneath the bumper, and it made a very nice sound. One of the guys I stopped to see one night told me that "we could still hear your pipes when you were driving past the dam!". The dam is 3 miles from his house!
In the next few weeks I'am have to replace the 40 year old smitty's on my 35. The plan is to go with 2 1/2 inch pipe and hushpower mufflers. I'am a little afraid I will loose the rap the I have grown to love.
it seems like everyone is saying smithys. I have heard of people going with different legnths per pipe. LIke a 10in in one pipe and then a 20in in the other. Anyone else ever heard of that? -Andrew
I'm putting them on a flattie V8, but the mufflers from my '97 Harley that were put aside in favour of drag pipes are what I'm using. Nice chrome, small diameter, built-in clamp, and the look nice sticking out the back. Flatman
I've got a set of the "Never Rust" baffeled SS, I got them in Louisville at the Nats. There is always a guy selling them in the main building. Paid like 85.00 bucks for the pair. They are almost straight through and they are plenty LOUD on my Chevy. BB
Smithys, or "Smittys" available today sound nothing like the original steelpacks that made the name legendary. Nothing is sold today that even comes close ... for the best cop-callers with a small investment, try running the headpipes as short as possible into a pair of "Y"s as far forward as you can get them, then into 4 each 2 1/2" scavengers hung underneath, parallel to the ground, exiting even with and around 1" beneath the axle. Looks best if your car or truck is about 6" lower in front with 5.90s / 8.20s ... and have a bondsman on retainer ... 302
The olds ones seriously weigh 3 times more than the new ones. I just put a pair of the new ones on my car not too long ago. Better than nothing. Or is it?
Im running my 235 with fentons and the smallest glasspacks cherry bomb makes, I think there 18" with 1 7/8 pipe all the way back. Sounds perfect, Nice rappity rap rap. a deep throaty idle, I thought about straight pipes before, but now i know it be way too loud, They can hear me rappin from blocks away with the cherry bombs, And on the freeway I sound like the frickin Red Barron
I think this idea came from the folks that split the manifold 5 & 1 ... the long one goes on the single cylinder ... I split a '50 Pontiac "ironing board 8" 5 & 3 once ...one side chased the other as the hydro worked out - I'll never forget that one ! 302
I agree with 51 Ratt! There's NOTHING quite like the tone & rumble of a nice set of Smitty's! A buddy of mine hung a pair under his small block powered 48 Chevy half ton, & I'm telling you, it just sounds WICKED! The tone is SO cool! Also, they are relatively cheap, & available from Speedway! Give me one good reason!....just one!
My 55 Olds has a set of Smittys I bought NOS....25 years ago! they sound great! The new ones don't sound as good, unfortunately. There is a great muffler out there, though, for a lot of RAP and the old Smitty-type sound. Brockman Mellowtones. I run them on all the customs I've built for myself since doing the Olds. Brock makes them himself, you can get them with glass packing, steel, or no packing. He will make them in any length from like 12 inches, to 48 inches. he can also give advice on the best packing/size for your application. Great people, as well, Brock and Elaine Brockman.
Here's a clip of my '50 plymouth flat six, pair of Smithy's, tube headers, and a crossover pipe. Not loud, no snap crackle pop. Just right for me as a daily driver. Nice even tone is what I was after, and happy with the result. Pete http://www.50plymouth.com/12-sou/rev2.mov There's a few driving clips on my site too, click the link below, then click "sound". Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, sounds as good as NOTHING! Why spend the money? But I'm a cheap bastard.
dont know about how smithys sound on a 6 but on my flathead they sounded like a fart in a snowsuit. now ive got no mufflers and it sounds mean.
to get the right sound is nothing but if you dont want to deal with the fuz then 4 1/2 in resonaters as close to the moter as possable so then you will still get the gerat rap that you are lookin for and still be quite at nutral o what are you running for a intake on that if you want to see a weid set up on a 235 check this out that i built My Blog URL http://blog.myspace.com/chris_hali
Your intake looks great but proves that an oldtimer was right when he said I would be able to close my hood with a multi-set-up
