i am looking at putting camaro front brakes on my canadian 54 poncho which is a chevy with different eyeshadow and lipstick. can anybody recomend a master kit to use. the car is going from 3 pedals to 2 so i only need brake, not clutch. thanks
Always match the master to the front brakes. So, buy the master for the brake donor car, ie: a Camaro. It's best to use a power booster with discs, however there were factory Camaros w/o boosters (I had one), so get that master cylinder. If the rear brakes come out too strong, or too weak adjust the rear wheel cylinder size like so: Too strong, go larger Too weak, go smaller NEVER play around with front brakes, those can be almost 100% of your stopping power. I have always used a combo valve from the front brake donor car as well, and as you MUST use some sort of metering valve, this option is cheapest. Done right, you'll have late model stopping power for not much money. Good Luck, Cosmo
Oh, by the way: If you continue using lipstick and eyeshadow on your cars, people will start to talk........
no power...36367 Napa united, this is a 69-76 vette m/c 1 in bore....used this setup on the 46, (mustang II calpers, 7/8 bore rear cyl. and no power assist. use the correct residual valves, and an adjustable proportioning(sp) valve to the rear, and you should stop just fine
if the front firewall is the same (meaning access panels and all that) watson fabrication makes a power brake kit for it.they make a kit that bolts to the firewall for 49-54 chevys.check em out.i was thinkin about gettin one for my car. ~Creepy
Master Power/MP Brakes makes a dual chamber master cylinder that goes under the floor. They also make one that has remote resevoir. FONZI
Chevs of the 40's will convert the original master cylender to a dual chamber one if you send yours out. Derrick
BAD PAT- Here is what I recommend- buy a rebuilt master cylinder for a 1981 full size FORD LTD. its is aluminm -has a 1-1/8" bore and a large resevoir PLUS it has the outlet ports on the opposite side of resevoir that others do-THIS puts the lines towards the frame side rather than the driveshaft side.... Oh -get this part it will set you back about 30 dollars total!
Not to hijack the thread but what about keeping the front drums and adding a Camaro 10 bolt? Is there a dual resevoir that would work in place of the single?
I converted mine to a dual system and used a ford truck drum/drum master. I worked great. You still need to buy a pedal kit or fab one of your own to mount the new cylinder. Tim
I was hoping I might get lucky, like I did on the 56 . I used a Corvette m/c and it lined right up no pedal swapping or anything.
The Corvette master cyl is good if you need large capacity. It was designed for 4 wheel disc brakes so you need residual valves to run it on front disc/rear drum setups. If you don't need the large capacity I would recommend the disc brake master from early Camaros and Chevelles. The same master was used across the small and mid size GM line so you should have an easy time getting a new one and kits in the future. This master is a little less massive than the Vette one. The same casting was offered on some jeeps with the lines coming out on the other side.
