401 Nailhead Buick in my '36 Dodge Coupe. Just cool motors with good history and sound. Decided to build a Non-Ford fenderless coupe around a Nailhead with a 4 speed.

  2. The bucket has a 272 Y Block, The reason was because when dad built the car back in 65 overhead valve V8 engines were hard to come by over here in NZ, and if my memory serves me correctly it came out of a wrecked 56 Customline which just happened to be in the right place at the right time, so its what he went with. Bloody good choice as im a pretty die hard Ford man. But ive kinda broken the tradition by running a Nailhead in the Tudor im building..

My '30 Roadster will have a 354 HEMI, I just like the looks of it. The first Hot Rod I ever saw had one, plan is to build a period perfect 1962 Hot Rod. Bob

  6. Great minds..... Very interested to hear about swapping gearboxes - we'll have to talk about how to fit a T5 to this. It would also help to have some more photos of the engine and installation - not many 347 Pontiacs to look at over in the UK. Here's the 347 in my 21/27 T Modified;

  7. Not in my rod yet (actually sitting in my father-in-law's back shed). A '53 Desoto flathead six cylinder, because I know the guy who is fixing up the original car it came out of. I was 'round at his house talking to him one day and he was showing me the Chrysler 318 and torqueflyte he'd just fitted to the desoto, I asked him what he did with the original motor and he said "It's sitting over there under a blanket, wanna buy it?" so he poured some fuel down the carby, hooked up a battery and started the thing up sitting on the shed floor. So I said "sounds good how much?" He replied "$200 for the motor, gearbox, crossmembers, tailshaft, wiring loom, everything and if you were here a couple of days earlier you could have had the rearend too" (he sent the rear to scrap 'cos he needed the space in the shed. bugger!). I couldn't get the cash out of my pocket quick enough.

I definately wanted something other than the SBC thing so I went for the Big Block Six Cylinder motor. Bored out 292 Chevy motor from a Surburban with a T-5 tranny. It certainly cost more to build but the cool look and sound factor was worth it. Lots of torque too!

Have a 460 big block in my wagon for two reasons. 1.the motor was free (well kinda it did need a rebuild but thats another story) and 2. Everything's better with a big block! ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1390584910.301209.jpg

    340 LA Small Block Mopar...

    Why?
Cause I have a bunch of 'em & they don't call it the "Small Block Hemi" for nothing...

It'll get "older school" valve covers, Hilborn Injection and som other stuff.
Hence my car is in the "Tradtionally Styled" section.

    I'm also running a 904 + 8-3/4 for the same reason.

I've got a '56 354 Chrysler Hemi that was left me in my friend's will: Dick Powell, famed drag boat builder/racer...R.I.P., Dick...Hemi goes in my '27 Highboy.

My '55 F100 had a SBC 327 in it when it was stolen from the P.O. Vandals stole the engine, Muncie, and wheels. 1972: I got the truck from a friend who 'recovered' it, for $60.
1973: A Corvette customer GAVE me the '69 350 out of his 'Vette when I replaced it with a Crate engine. 11K miles and a flat cam. Free engine went in my 'new' F100.

1996: Another customer GAVE me a 1999 350, (2nd gen.) with 8K miles. (overheated, blew a head gasket) Went thru it, honed it (0 taper!) Grant rings, Clevite brgs., surfaced Vortec heads, 3-angle valve job, Comp cam (280*) Edelbrock intake, Holley 600, Echlin dual point ignition...
That's why there's still a SBC in my F100. LOL
(the first 350 I had clocked 220K miles in 23 years...never used oil between 3K miles...In 1984 was used as a support vehicle to Fremont (Baylands) for Old Time Drags for our Street Roadster...The guys were ribbing me to 'run the truck through...' Finally, I did. Street tires, mufflers, alternator hooked up...13.40 at 103 MPH! Engine had 150K on it then.
That's ONE of the reasons I like the engine...That, and it's never failed me. (Well...It DID; One dead battery)

SBC of the 283/327 variety, 'cause ive got a pickup bed full of 'em and parts to make most of 'em run. BUT a twin turbo 215 Buick goes in the next one.

I graduated in 1962, so when I bought my '63 Biscayne I wanted to stay basically period correct....so went with a sbc 283, bored and beefed up a fair amount with a 4 speed stick, really enjoy driving it.
I would love to put a 409 in it, but that just ain't gonna happen for this ol' retired fixed income boy...
    Good thread by the way...

Was looking for something different for my 33 when I found a Edmonds 2x2 intake for a Studebaker at a swap meet. The rest is history.

Caddy 425 in the '41 Pontiac. I was looking for a '77 Caddy for the frame, when I ran across this one sitting in a barn yard. The engine had been rebuilt 6k ago, but the daughter burned up the trans when she got stuck in the snow. I got it for $100...didn't use the frame after all.
