I'm building a 57 chev wagon into a gasser. My uncle gave me a 440 with a 727 trans bolted to it, but some water got into it and seized the motor. I was wanting to use the 440 just because every tri 5 chev either has a sbc or bbc in it. On the other hand I have a 283 and a 366 or 427 bbc, not sure what it is til I check the #s. WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO DO?

Putting a Buick 455 in my '59 Buick because I prefer same make mills.
If it were so customized one couldn't recognize it, or -say- was 75% deviated from stock, it wouldn't matter as much to me.

  3. currently all the mills are removed from my projects. My 49 GMC had a 235 in it when I bought it. It ran great and I loved driving it but the 283 I got for free is looking like a possible choice. For my hopefully soon to be started 50 merc project I have to many choices, a 331 hemi, flathead, a running sbf with 3 spd od and the 283 power pack motor. I hate having too many choices sometimes.

  6. Got your standard issue SBC with Vette dressing in my 56 Chebby. Why? I guess because it belongs in there. I had my 348 in it but decided to pull it and put it in my 34 truck.

    300 Ford I-6, C4 & 8in. (2.79) in a 1927 Model T 2-door Coupe.
Why? Cause I blew up the 302 I put in there & I needed a tuff, reliable engine that would bolt to the driveline already there. Parts are cheap & easy to get & at 1700 lbs. the torque on the street should be pretty quick. In the big scheme of things, it's better to drive em than tow em!

  10. 406 SBC, built strong. Now with 471,Dyers blower, roller cam, zoomie headers. Why? Because I can, have lots of parts, and its scary FAST! Will post pics as soon as I figure out how to. LOL

A 268 Pontiac flathead 8 with dual Holley Webers, Crane cam, duals and dual bank headers, HEI, Muncie. Because even 40 years ago I was sick of seeing a SBC (yawn) in every street rod I saw. It runs great, will cruise 70mph all day with 3:63 gears. Has the mellowest sounding exhaust you ever heard. Most people think its a V8 until I raise the hood.

I went with an SBC mostly because the truck was already set up for it. It had a tuckered out 283 in it when I got it. I found a 327 close and went through it. It ended up a nice running setup.

  21. I'm running a Dodge 270 Hemi in my 31 A tudor. Paid 10 bucks for it and sold the flathead tranny adapter for a 100. Used the cash plus to rebuild it in 1985.

Planned to run either an early Nailhead or a Packard V8 in my "new" '51 Stude 1/2-ton pickup. Came across a running 322 out of a '56 Buick Super first, that's what's going in the Stude. Always loved Nailheads, they sound like nothing else. It'll be plenty of power for the very lightweight truck too. Plan to run a 3-speed stick tranny, not sure yet on the rearend but it'll all have to be period-correct (c.1961).

I had this 331 hemi laying around, and was looking for an early Mopar to put it in. Kept finding overpriced rusty junk. Then the 230 flathead 6 in my pickup started knocking. I restored this truck in '75, and enjoyed it as a stocker. But since I had to pull the 6 anyways, I realized I had a very good place for the hemi.

The truck is way more fun, I should have done this 20 years ago! I'm driving it much farther now, and getting there much quicker!

Mine's got a Merc flattie. Why, because I've always wanted a real deuce and a running flathead and this deuce came with it.

I'm saving up my nickels and dimes to rebuild the 354 hemi I've got stashed back and someday...

Ha! I was waiting on someone to post one of these up in this thread. Its hard to find a running example of one of those - most of em are soda cans by now.

    Ain't that the truth!

  27. 426 Max Wedge with a pushbutton trans. Because I had it and it didn't fit too bad.

Well, I have two cars currently that are very different from each other.

The first is my 62 Merc Monterey. It originally had the 352 FE that ran ok but had week compression in one cylinder. Being my first FE, I did a bunch of research on them and learned about all the possibilities they can be made into. I decided to go with a 410. Lack of funds and priorities put that dream on the back burner of the stove that I didn't even own! Anyways, fast forward a couple years, my younger brother acquired a great running 66 Parklane with only 50k on the clock. Not being able to keep up with the gas tank, the car became mine after a trade for an OT gas sipper. Best part is that Parklane had an original 410 Merauder motor! Long story short, I now have a 410 in my 62!
My second car is a 64 Chevelle wagon.
The decision for that motor has always been clear. 327 sbc backed by a four speed. I'm in the process of building one similar to my Dads 327 that he ran in his 54 Chevy truck when I was a kid. I was to young to know how fast it was, but I do remember that he never lost a race out on the streets! Dad passed away in Sept 96 and I've wanted to build that 327 every since! Now I am! x2 I love the look of a well dressed nailhead.

That being said, my current 55 chevy PU project has a 350/350, b/c it was cheap and readily available...
