    Hello,

Holman and Moody Ford guys did wonders for Ford and the zillion followers/owners. That was the point. “Build it and they will come…” But with the race to go fast, did it? And did it make believers for sales at the Ford dealers across the country? After the Eastcoast race car adventures, Holman-Moody bought out Bill Stroppe in 1965 and the Long Beach facility at 2190 Temple Ave. became Holman-Moody-Stroppe. They built around 50 race cars a year until Moody sold his portion of the company after the 1972 season.

"The Challenger III was born. The lil’ V8 was replaced with Ford’s new 289, the 4-speed remained, the chassis further stiffened, and finned aluminum drums liberated from a Continental were added to the mix."

"And while the Challengers might have been a failure on the track, it’s hard to argue against what it represented and the direction it looked to take – Smaller, lighter, more athletic… and therefore, faster. But to make the small car thinner, a section was modified and in place. That did make the sideview less thick." It also did not… “does it make the butt, too big,” either.

So, with the running gear and high performance 289 motor/4 speed, this would have been a top seller when we were in high school. Using the same body style, a custom Nomad style top incorporated to make a two door station wagon with some attitude. The Ford factory Viking Blue hides the sectioned center area well.

After drawing cool, little Nomad competitor, it needed something to make it splash with younger folks, besides the 289 and 4 speed. So, a mild chop was altered. It looked mean and ready for some teenage explorations and the weekend car shows.

But, as chopped vehicles go, it would have eventually been a weekend only car show participant. Going 100 to 200 miles in a chopped vehicle, just does not seem likeable. So, a normal color street hot rod would have been the goal of the design/sales team for Ford.

Unusual styling, the 2 door Nomads were gone from the dealers by then, so, it would have the 2 door station wagon market cornered, even for young teenagers and their longboard surfboards inside or on top.
upload_2023-11-3_7-9-12.png full top height, full all around clear vision...
Since the overall wheel base is around 9 feet, the longboards on top would just fit. With the 289 hi performance motor, 4 speed and bucket seats, it would have been a cool cruiser, too. Storage inside the locked wagon area would be tight… lower the bucket seat backs and place the longboard noses in the footwells would work.

A surf wagon with a slight rake angle… and hidden potential for cruising… even with two longboards on top. YRMV

  24. Beautiful paint. I'm not bumping this for further comments, just to get the attention of @Moriarity and/ or @Jeff Norwell as it has not been closed and archived for the week.
Cheers all, great little show this week.
