I've been slowly collecting parts with no real plan in mind but thinking maybe I could get the right parts to build another '32 modified because I always regretted selling my first one and can't afford to buy it back. Here's a pic. of it, and a little plug for Dale it's on the classifieds for sale. Well yesterday I made a little road trip to get a 21 stud flattie and some other goodies, got up at 1:30 am. hit the road at 2:30 and drove 350 mi. one way to load up some stuff, well what a surprise the damn truck almost wasn't big enough here's a pic. of the haul. 21 stud, trans. w/ zephyr gears, B/W overdrive unit, early '32 rear, '32 frontaxle, spring, wishbone, and shocks. Firewall V-8 with pedal, V-8 radiator, oh yeah the rear came with really nice radius rods and shocks. Whole bunch of small stuff, everything needed to put it all together and go. I didn't have any trouble staying awake on the way home my mind was going 100 mph. all the way. I had kind of pictured in my mind doing another mod. with the Doane Spencer style front end, a little channel etc. I have an original '32 roadster cowl coming that should be here in a couple days that has doors, and I bought a '32 roadster dash a while back that was all cut up and I welded a piece in and put in a panel I purchased a while ago not knowing what I'd do with it but I think it will be perfect for this project. Now the problem, this stuff is too nice to really cut up to do a channel, I'd like to use all the original stuff, I know someone will say just buy the back of a Brookville roadster and build the whole car but that's not in the budget, seems I always end up just short in the finance dept. I just don't know if a high boy would look that good with this body style, the frame I have coming is short ( 75" wheelbase ) it was under a hay wagon, I figure I can reverse the axle tubes and get it out to modified length but I haven't seen it in person yet so who knows it may not even be able to be used we'll see. Any ideas ?
Well it looks like you got a good start, as far as Ideas? I think you already know how to go about it, your on the right track. Just let it come to you
Whatever you deside to do will be great to follow, you do have a great track record. I really enjoy following the pile of parts to finished car builds. Did you get the Banger with the overhead in photo #2? Hope to see you at Hershey. Bob
Bob, Banger is going out to Calif. part of the roadster parts trade. I'll stop by at Hershey, can't wait.
I never expected to end up with this much nice original stuff, I usually don't feel bad about slicing stuff up because it's pretty far gone anyway. Must be gettin' old and developing a conscience haha.
Guess everyone missed the photo of the '32 Phaeton body! What is the story there, real or Fordor refab?
Wow the wheel base is SHORT... maybe knock up a frame from 6x2 is funds are tight? Looks like lots of good parts though but fear you might be right about a highboy modified. Sure hope someone posts some pics up of one as Im now interested too. Perhaps one way to look at it is if you loved your old one and would have bought it back, why not build a clone with improvements where you know they were needed. I guess in my view you arent chopping a rare car, just accumaulated parts that are available.
Bob, It was a real phaeton, I just got the front half someone else got the back. I'm thinking I'll mock it up as a highboy and if I really don't like the looks I'll do the butcherin' but that won't happen until after Hershey and who knows what will turn up there ?
Dale, I'd do that in a heart beat if I could get that much for it but I'm afraid I'd come up a little short.
Haha, I sold it to Dale before I knew him, just kiddin'. Yes it was the front of the old crow phaeton, looks to be in pretty nice shape except for the door bottoms but hey we got 7 months of winter coming up need something to do.
Bob, here's a few pics. of previous doodlrods, the first one was a Model A that I tried to roughly copy the little modified the Dave Lukari sp? has with the Ardun in it, I found out just how hard it was to re create something, it didn't come out at all like what I was shooting for. Then moved on to a '32 modified that Dale bought and that I want to re create. Then there was the little Dodge modified that I put together in several different configurations but never did get going. Then came the '32 Doodlrod a real attempt at a '32 Doodlebug / hot rod. That was a lot of fun but thought I had too much good stuff on it and decided to build it into a full length roadster, bought all the Brookville stuff to do that and ran out of money. ( sold and hear it's full length now.) So that brings us back to todays project that I'm really having a hard time deciding which way to go with. My evil side says doodlebug and my good side says roadster, hopefully I'll land somewhere in the middle and it will all work out. I do love the modifieds and I don't want to make the mistake of running out of funds again and have to sell it.
doodlrodz: Don't give the ole Turkey to hard a time, it's my fault he's selling your old car, cause he bought my deuce modified project.
Winters are long here too.....I'm doing both, a RPU modified and a 3W. Rick, sorry I mised the BBQ, I was bummed.....did not get to Reno until Friday PM, no way to get there in time. Always next year.
Haha, that was the one that came with the schroeder box when I bought it, I think Dale put a shorter one on to ease the steering effort at low speeds.
Quick update, finally got the frame and man is it short, real doodlebug length no way I'm going to be able to make this one work although it is tempting to do a doodlebug just for fun. Been doing a lot of welding and grinding trying to clean up all the old brackets and the rough kick in the rear. Worst part was one side was 1" longer than the other haha damn hay wagon. Got it mocked up with the stock '32 stuff, wide beam, uncut bones, shocks etc. First big problem was this stuff came out of a pickup and I didn't know that there was a difference in the angle of the steering columns, this one has a F-100 box and the angle of the column was too steep to get my dash in so I found a stock '32 box and column and everything fits good. So either weld up the holes in the frame and rotate the column down or use the stock box and get it rebuilt. Problem with rotating the column down is the column then is way out of the cut out in the firewall. I am picking up some frame pieces at Hershey that I can lengthen the frame with, we'll see how that works out. Also made a trade for a full frame that has a wide beam with split bones and I have a dropped and filled front axle so now I really have to decide, Doane Spencer style front or dropped, or stock???? I am liking the doodlebug though.
