Got some more pieces of the puzzle but still can't decide which way to go, I think I may have a deal on a back section for the modified on some original '32 tin. Here's some pics. of my recent additions.
Thanks, I'm really leaning towards a high boy this time just not into cutting it up to do a channel the firewall and other stuff is too nice and besides that I don't bend all that good anymore so I need something easier to get into.
Finally got started on the winter project, blew the doodlebug apart and cut the rear cross off the frame and extended it 2' and put in a Model A rear cross. Now I have to make a choice on which way to go with the front end, I have a real nice '32 wide beam with un split bones and a dropped and filled axle I keep flip flopping between the two and can't seem to settle on one. If I use the wide beam I was going to do a Rolling Bones style front but I want to use the stock '32 shocks so I'm leaning towards the dropped and filled with stock shocks etc. I blew out some walls in the garage to get more room and built a work table so I don't have to do everything on the floor it feels like I have a whole new garage I could even build a full length car now but that probably won't happen, love the modifieds. Here's some pics. of the progress.
Thanks for the progress report and photos! Tomorrow I plan on the finish welding on my '30 Roadster firewall, thanks for the motivation. Bob
Have you found all the parts for that roadster Bob ? I'm going to try real hard to have this little modified going for spring, I hope I can stay motivated.
Nice collection of parts. I really wish people would stop referring to "rolling bones" style front ends. Lots of that style were done before they ever started and they certainly didn't invent the idea.
Jeff, The Clay Smith engine went to Calif. it's in an old sprint car that's road legal there was a post on here about it, kind of wish I had it for this project. I gave up calling that front end style the Doane Spencer front end because so many guys think the Rolling Bones invented it.
I was just looking through some of my old pics. and found this one of '32 Worthington tractor that I had and realized that it came from the factory with one of those Doane Spencer front ends, guess I'll have to start calling it the Worthington tractor front end now haha.
Well I finally decided to channel this thing and go with the Worthington front end, so I've got all this really nice '32 stuff that I don't want to cut up is there anyone on here that is trying to bring back a channeled roadster to a high boy ??? I have a beautiful wide beam axle and uncut wishbone that could probably be plated it's that nice, I need to split the bones for this front end set up and really don't want to cut these. Also have a very nice early firewall that I don't want to section I'm looking to channel the cowl about 4" if anyone has a sectioned firewall. I also have a complete early '32 rear end that includes the rear cross member, spring, radius rods etc. I am going to keep the brakes off of it I'm using a quick change and it's for a later rear. I also have a '32 V-8 radiator that I won't be able to use it has been slightly modified to hook up radiator hoses from a later 21 stud but could easily be changed back. So I'm looking to do some swapping if someone has all the stuff for a channeled roadster and wants to go high boy.
Got my intake back from the polisher today, damn I may have to paint this car. Also bought a new dash and did some mockery.
Thanks guys, I'm trying to pick out a wheelbase right now, with the stock spring placement it will be about 96" , spring on top will be about 103" and spring ahead of the axle would be about 110" I've always liked the shorter wheelbase on a modified but I'm going to have to get it off the table and get it rolling so I can push it outside and get a good look at it with each set up and pick out which one fits my eye. I'm leaning towards the 103 right now as long as the spring on top doesn't give it too much rake. I've never done this type front end before so I'm anxious to see how it sits.
In building A's the 103+ inch wheel base worked out just fine. I'd guess it's a tread width to WB relation.
Could you post a few photos of the front end set up? I think I'll be using a Rolling Bones style setup on my Roadster project. Merry Christmas! Bob
I was thinking that I could always change to a Model A body if for some reason I decided not to use the '32 with the 103" wb. That and it will probably drive a little better with the 103" wb. Bob, I searched the Rolling Bones front end on here and found some really good shots of Larry's 3 window build, right now it's hard to get any good shots because of the low light in my garage ( florescent lights don't like low temps. ) as soon as I can get it out in the light I'll try to get some shots of it. I'm trying to use just what I have on hand and only orig. stuff. The spring mounts on the wishbones are the ends off an old broken main leaf from a '32 spring, I'm trying to figure out the shock arms right now I hate to cut the '32 perches but may have to in order to make it work.
Bob, don't know, I'm running a 1/2" grade 8 bolt through it too just in case. I liked the perch bolt through a bushing design I saw on here somewhere, that gave it some movement so it could rotate with the suspension but decided to go the minimalistic route.
Hi Mike, after a year of not touching the modified i got from you, I spent the last three days building it, pictures to follow, its now a full size east coast channeled 32 roadster, deck lid is being louvered, so will the hood, doors work, structure is nearly finished, 106" wheelbase.... I've fallen in love all over again
Hey man that's great, can't wait to see the pics. Must be you were too tired after the trip, you just had to get rested up to tackle it. Pics. Pics.
Well it's been a long month of doing a lot of OT. stuff like knocking some walls out of the garage to make it big enough to turn around in and putting up some sheetrock, moving water lines etc.etc. also built the table you can see the mock up on. Finally got back at it a little today and it's almost a roller, put the rear together quickly just so I can mock it up and see how it's going to sit and locate the radius rod mounts and shocks and get a length on the torque tube and drive shaft. I have 4 18" wires and am looking for some 18" knobbies if anyone has a set kicking around. Here's some pics. from today's mockery.
