Haha I may have to put tractor tires on it to keep with the Worthington theme. My next big challenge is going to be figuring out the radiator though, I have a stock '32 V-8 radiator I want to use but being channeled and the radiator in front of the front cross is going to be tough, any ideas ???
Well here's today's progress, got the backing plates and drums on and rear mocked up with the firewall in place. It's starting to look like something haha maybe a Doodlrod 94" wheelbase in this configuration. Rear is jacked up to what would be a 31" dia. rear tire. Going to try and get the engine and trans. in to see what affect the weight has on the front stance.
Got a little more done today mostly finding things that I have to change, I did the motor mounts before I pinched the frame so now they're a little off and the drivers side exhaust manifold isn't going to work. The stance is too low in the back when the pinion angle is right so I'll have to put the spring on top of the rear, that will give me about a 101" wb. first time I've had a car over 100" Hope it still qualifies as a modified.
Damn I hate it when a plan falls apart, I was going along happy as a clam when I check the HAMB classifieds the other day and there's a set of '32 roadster quarters for sale so I pm the guy and say I'm very interested just need to see a pic. Well several hours later I get a bunch of good pics. and tell him I'll take 'em, man I'm excited gonna be a lot of work to stretch this thing out to 106" wb. but what the hell it's gonna be a real east coast channeled roadster right ? Wrong, guy emails me back and says the stuff he needed the money for wasn't available anymore so he wasn't selling 'em. Man talk about a let down, haven't been able to go out in the garage all day, just bummed.
Just find me a fendered coupe model A that's a driver with v8 and I'll trade you back, this one is getting close
Well I've chuggin' along working when it's warm which isn't often around here ( snowed today ) Picked up my old Moon tank at Fitchburg last weekend and made some headers to come out the opening in the hood sides which was fun because there's no room around the steering box. I need some help finding something to put on the back of this thing, I bought a back from a pick up but that isn't going to look right. I'm thinking maybe the lower back from a 2 dr. or 4 dr. if someone has one laying around that isn't too weak to weld up. Here's some pics.
The car looks "English" as it is mocked up now, that isn't a slam or a bad thing. Your idea of a Tudor or Fordor rear section might work out well, did any cars other than the Willys 77 have a sunken spare tire?
Keep the progress on this one up to date. Something about what your doing to this one has struck a chord. Some of my long dormant ideas for a modified have reemerged after looking at your progress. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!!! Frank
Thanks Frank, I've been pushing ahead even though I have no idea what I'm going to end up with on the ass end, I almost bought some cut off Brookville 3 window quarters, missed out on two deals for real roadster quarters, bought a pick up back section that just isn't going to work but I have faith something will turn up, or may have to run bare bottomed for a while.
I'm afraid that will be even harder to find than roadster quarters. How is that roadster project of yours coming ?
This Duesenberg photo was posted by saacha on the Race Car 1894-1944 thread, it raced in Argentina, hope it gives you some ideas.
Bob, Now that I have the old Moon tank I kind of want to leave that exposed so my options are getting limited although if the right piece came along I could probably deal with hiding it in the trunk. I had a little fun yesterday welding up my exhaust, got my baffles and welded them into the pipes. Here's a couple pics. still have some grinding to do but had to see what they were going to look like not duck taped together.
Getting closer, got my radiator in and the hood trimmed to length, headlight bar made, doors done and mounted with the B pillars, got the seat floor pan in and ready to finish the seat mounts. Still looking for a back section from a 2 dr. or ???? Please no more BS ers, if you have something you think will work and you do want to sell it send me a pm. I'm open to all ideas.
Hallelujah, just paid for a set of quarters last night should have 'em by the weekend or early next week. So friggin' excited that I finally found someone that actually wanted to sell what they offered instead of jerking me around. Bad part is when it rains it pours and I also bought a bunch of '32 2dr. back pieces that I can hopefully make into a modified back section so I've got a decision to make, probably just mock it up both ways and decide which one I like best or make it convertible so I can switch it back and forth. Man can't wait to start welding and grinding again it's been a long and frustrating road.
Holy crap I got me '32 roadster. Got my quarters today don't know what they're from maybe a cabriolet ?? anyway had to add 7 1/2" to them to get the wheels centered but I think it's gonna be alright after a couple of weeks of welding and grinding. Does someone make patches for the tails on these ? They have really been butchered with two different kinds of pieces welded in.
Thanks Gary, got a long way to go but I'm excited about the build again and can't wait to get back out in the garage in the morning.
There are no body detail beads on either side of the decklid on 32 Cabriolet and 32 3W. The edge around the top of that quarter where the top would meet, does appear to be 32 Cabriolet from what little I can see.
I'll try to get some better pics of the quarters today it would be nice to know for sure what I've got.
