I'm thinking of running supremes on my '53. Have 215's in back and 205's in the front. The rear wheels are reverse chrome 15x8 and I can nearly get my pinky finger between the tire and the wheels lip now. Haven't checked the offset, but wondering what others are using. Would like to keep the tire out towards the lip as much as possible..
I would like to see the answer also. I have a 54 Pontiac Chieftain that I am working on and the original tires are listed as 7.10-15 and the replacement as 215-75-15. The problem being the radials are wider at the width. Section and tread.
My experience with wheels mounted on '49-54 Chevy's is a 15 X 7 reversed is the max offset if the suspension is stock height. You want to lower the car, then a 15 X 6 reversed offset would be recommended. A pinky finger distance is not enough clearance. Imagine going around a corner with the sidewall flexing and the suspension bouncing slightly. You will rub. If you like the sidewall out by the lip, then raise the suspension about another half inch to get adequate clearance. Otherwise narrow the wheel some. Others may have a different experience. Good luck with your decision
with limited rear inner fender to tire clearance can carefully narrow the lip - sometimes on craigslist will see guys offering fenderwell rolling service usually for rice rocket types - there are other old school ways to do this. but, without pics & actually showing how to do this incorporating a baseball bat, vice gripes, etc one can really damage a fender.
