Technical What oil filter do I need?

OK, this is so DUMB that I fear to place it on the HAMB. I have a SB 350 in a hot rod that needs a new oil filter, but I can't see what the number is on the filter the way it's positioned ( there's also a chrome cover on it that won't come all the way down without dropping the exhaust on that side.
Clearly, I'd like to have a new filter on hand before beginning the oil change. As best I know, it's a 350 out of a mid 70's pickup. So, were these all the same and I can get filter "X", or, do I need to dig some more or just take the old filter off and make it a 2 day job?

Hp2 is the fram full size one. They have shorter ones if you're tight on space though.

 

Lots of people hate fram, and I don't use them but that's the size and you can get the equivalent in whatever brand. Hp5 is the short version.

 

measure the length of the cover and that should be able to help you choose which filter to use as for chevys they used a short ( ac Delco) Pf454 1/2 quart ,a long pf35 or 1218 1 quart and the 2 quart for HD engines ( pf 932) .

 

go to walmart and look up a filter for a mid 70s chevy. it's not rocket surgery.

PH5 is the Fram number, PF1218 is the AC Delco number, there are other numbers for other brands

 

Ask the kid at the parts counter.

 

I believe in AC it is PF35.......

There are at least six sizes of filters that will work on a SBC. I would use the biggest size that will clear the exhaust. I have even used the Motorcraft FL-1A on my '57 with a 283 block. I have cut open a lot of filters to see what's inside and for now I only use Wix or the NAPA gold series that is made by Wix.

 

some of the spin on adapters used the Ford/Dodge filter like the FL-1, others used the normal Chevy filter.

The good old AC PF-35 has been replaced by the PF-1218.

 

There was also a mid size AC filter at one time between the pf 35/ 1218 ( large) and pf 454 ( short) a pf 25 ( medium ) , haven't seen one in years.
But all 3 will work.

 

the pf 35 is still around ( renumbered as a pf35L ) , and they also make it in the old white version of the 60's ( pf 35 ) , the pf 35 doesn't have a anti drainback valve in it , the PF1218 does , as the thinner oils ( 5w-30 ) were back siphoning the oil on shut down and causing the lifter clatter on start ups , the 1218 eliminates this .
