My friend bought a chopped aluminum radiator for his '31 A coupe from Speedway and it looks waaaay too short to me. We channeled the car 4" and the radiator was said to be for a shell chopped 4.5". It sounded about right, so we got it. Now, when we mocked it up it looks a few inches too short. I think it looks goofy. The total height is 21.5", I'm thinking it should be closer to 25". What are you guys running? I'm having a hard time finding anyone else that offers chopped radiators, and I can't find anyone that lists decent dimensions.
I'm using one of the Speedway Lo-Boy radiators in my Coupe and the opposite problem it being too tall! You could always use some sort of spacer under the radiator to increase its' height and fill the gap left at the bottom with some sheet metal, if its' paint the same as the radiator it won't be that noticable! Nick.
I believe what we have is the Speedway Lo-boy radiator. Your's is too low? Did you Z the frame along with channeling the body? Got any pictures? Thanks!
inkoret, yes mine's 'Z'd and channelled, but my radiator was 1'' too high, so I've unchannelled the body 1''.I'm sure with a bit of work you'll get your friends radiator to look right, heck I'd rather have a low radiator rather than a high one! These are the best pictures I've got I'm affraid. Nick.
You wouldn't happen to have a side profile would you? I'd like to see how it slopes down, yours looks just right.
inkoret, Best I've got at the moment, if can wait till tomrrow I'll take a picture full side if you like. Aw Shit, just noticed that me bloody avatar!!!!!!At least it'll go bigger, give you some idea! Nick.
I chopped a '28 shell 2-3/4" and had 1/4" clearance between Mustang rad and bottom lip. About 1" of top tank showed.
My "A" is channeled and the frame is "Zeed". I used the smallest crossflow chev rad from speedway. I cut one end tank off, welded up a new Model A end tank and welded it onto the new rad. I then mounted it as a down flow rad. I think the rad cost about $120. It works great to. Roger
Mine is a 40 ford rad that they narrowed to fit a 32 shell, Then they added a Rad mount that drops down under the frame as shown above. Never has dragged or hit anything with it but its pretty stout just in case.
Hey Johnny I used the Walker chopped 32 rad, in my old A. That car was channeled 4" and the rad was was chopped 3-3.5. I did not chop the grill shell, but channeled it down also. If need be just slide the shell up till it looks right and mount it to rad.
