I have a 1940 Desoto that has a 55 291 going into it for power. Using the original transmission or a 727, haven't decided yet. The 55 trans has the shifter mounted on the dash with an e brake to park it. I need to hear what would you use as an 8 3/4 if I did not use the full drive train from the 55. The 40 has a rear end measuring 60 29/32 width. What would be close to this in B bodies? I will be converting to disc brakes for the Dallas Texas traffic. Using the 55 for nostalgia reasons.
68-70 B body 65-68 C body E body 65-70 A100 Van they're all within half an inch, roughly. I'd leave the drums on the rear, and put discs on the front, and drive slightly carefully. this link is what I looked at to get that info https://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/threads/an-accurate-8-3-4-rear-axle-width-list.365494/ .
Here is a link to some measurements that you can consider: Rear Axle | Quality Engineered Components The explore is readily available at the pik-n-pulls and often cheap, similar for the Cherokee. The only downside to the Mopar 8-3/4 is cost. I have some in the discount bin if you want to consider one.
The newer rear will have a parking brake. Yours in currently on the trans, correct? If so, the 8 3/4 would solve one problem if ya change the trans.
