    Hello, just joined the club. There's a lot of great info here!
    I recently bought a '30 Model A coupe, bone stock. The plans are to build a tradition style hot rod. I want to go with a 8" or 9" Ford rear end. The engine will have around 300hp. I've been told that the 8" would be fine. The rear ends that i've found locally all seem to be about 58". That seems really wide for the narrow body. I've been told to look for 65-69 Mustangs and Comets, they are norrower. But from what I can tell they are still far to wide.

    Is there a "factory" 8"or 9" Ford rear end that doesnt have to be narrowed?

    Thanks!

    I am running an 8" out of a Maverick. Perfect width to fit under fenders, if that's the way you are going. IIRC it is about 56" drum to drum. There were some Ford 9s that were that narrow already, Bronco, Ranchero I think, but don't quote me on that.

    Oh and welcome to the board.

    The 8" should take 300 hp in a A model, a lot of folks used the early 28 spline 9" bronco rears in their A's

    I'm using an 8" out of a 69 Mustang, in my model A coupe. I don't have fenders and it seems to fit about right. You can adjust the fit with the backspacing of the wheels that you use.

    Toyota pickup, plenty strong for a Model A, cheap and plentiful, @ 54" wide (what I'm using with a HOT 350)
    2wd=3.73, 4wd=4.10 '86 and up are @ 56" wide
    I also have a 2000 Ford Explorer rear, 8.8, 3.73,limited slip,discs and @54" wide. These are easy to find as well.

  7. I used a 1986 S10 two wheel drive rearend under my roadster pickup, and it fits perfect with no width modification. It is 53 5/8" face to face of brake-drums. They are a tough 10 bolt rearend, cheap, and will fit the sedans and coupes as well with no width modifications.

    Ditto on the S10 rear, I'm running one under my A and push 300+ hp. Fits like it was made for an A and Ive been running my for about 3 years now without any problems

    If you want to run a 9", 57-59 Ford p***anger car will fit nice under fenders with regular offset rims... DO NOT purchase a 57-59 Merc 9", they are wider than the Ford...

    Thanks, me and a few buddies dismantled the coupe today. The body is off and I have someone coming by tomorrow to pick up the engine, trans and rear end. There's no turning back now!

    Thanks for everyones responses!

    I'm using a Maverick Rear (8") in my Highboy. Needs to be narrowed a little but doesn't look outrageous. (Look @ Avatar).
