A friend has a 46 Ford pick up and somebody put a 57 Chevy car rear end in it. It is now blown up. I am trying to help him replace it. What would be a good choice? What years Ford? How about a Scout? I would like an offer if somewhere in the area has a candidate. Thanks!

How wide does it need to be? The 57-59 fords had a 9 inch that is about 57.5 inches wide also some of the first body style broncos had a narrow 9 inch.

66-77 Bronco is 58" and has a big bolt pattern like the original 46 pickup. HRP

Options are almost endless. First know how wide you need to be then narrow the field to units that fit without the cost of having to narrow them. 9" Fords come in several lengths that would work as well as the 8.8" Fords. The 8.8" is just as strong and complete units with disk brakes and Posi track are usually less than $200 from local Pick and Pull. If you go with the 8.8 from an Explorer be sure and get the U-bolts and plates since the axle tube is 3.25" instead of the usual 3.00".

I would suggest the 9" Ford. The rear is bulletproof and parts are plentiful. Give us the flange to flange measurement you are looking for and I can give you what car to look for in your wrecking yard. I agree with aaggie about the tube size, you want the "large bearing" rear, not the "small bearing".

I have a 9 inch out of a 67-72 ford pickup....had to move the spring perches but other than that it fit great!
