What rear ends are you running? Early hot rods (A's, B's, similar)

Stock Model A 3.78:1 with Firestone Deluxe Champion 550x16 fronts and 750x16 Rears. Pretty much all you need with a flatty. Bolts right up to the closed drive 39 3-speed and she turns right at 2500 rpm at 60mph.

 

My 29 coupe has a Halibrand QC, but you said you couldn't afford one of those.

So I'll tell you about my 28 PU. It has a 9" out of a '61 Ford (smooth case except for 2 dimples) that uses an "A" spring and '36 wishbones. It is a little too wide, but it's what I had at the time of the build. It's geared at 3.50, which is fun around town but still a tad much for the Y-block w/ 4spd on the highway.

I'm building a 33 Sedan that has a 9" out of a '57 that is narrower than the one in my PU. It has P&J ladder bars and uses the original 33 rear spring. It has a 3.00 "posi" that I hope will be decent for both town and highway.

 

`39 banjo in the coupe. The roadsters have 9" Fords w/3.25 ratio.

 

For a traditional rod ,40 banjo,with 3:54 gears, Street rod 8" ford with 3:25.
Getting harder to find useable old stuff. More fexibility with new stuff. JMO

 

I have a '52 Olds rearend that I'm planning on using in my T coupe. I know nothing about it. It was free, so seemed like a good choice.

Im running a 46 banjo with 411 gears and one of those " traditional" five speeds.

 

If you're going to use the whole drivetrain, including the O.D., why not keep the 4.11 for grunt away from a light. With O.D. your final ratio in top gear will be about 2.87.

 

Check your actual ratio. '39 Merc should have been 3.54 from the factory. Also check to make sure your Merc drive shaft isn't one piece with the pinion shaft (no coupler).

 

I'm using 39 truck banjo (3.78) tube and trany with later gears.Looks better than 9 or 8 in.to me.

 

Well, I think that until I can track down a 3.54 I'm going to stick with the '36 3.78 I've got.

Does anyone know if there are other years that the rear radius rods are interchangeable with the 36's? The original builder hacked them up and I need to find a straight set.

I assume this means that you were able to interchange parts from a 36 Lincoln Zephr rear end with a Ford '35 -'36 rear end??? Would you care to elaborate? I have a '36 Zephyr out back so I would be interested in what you did.

 

Try NAPA. They have NEW drums for F1, F100, passenger car, etc.

 

Didn't build Faye to be traditional so I used a 200 4R in front of a 9" with 3:89 gears. My '32 had a 9" in it also. If your running without fenders I hear the S10 4x4 rearend gives perfect look. And you won't have a lot of money tied up when you can afford to convert the the "traditional" rearend.

 

WE FOUND IT!
We stuck a late 40s banjo in our roadster. Found it out in the country in a field of tall grass. Complete unit that looked like someone just unbolted it and let it drop there. Probably a 4/11? Cleaned it up and rattle canned it black. Changed the oil and away we went. Flathead power with the "traditional" T5. No regrets.....

 

I'm running a Ford 9" under my 39' Ford.
I had a Granada 9", but switched to an early Bronco, because the Bronco is the most narrow of 9" rear ends.

I like the 9" because I can swap ratios easier

 

I got the rear end out of it late last night and once I turned it upside down and got a look at the number I realized I had read the rear wrong and it is a 937 or a 4.11.
The vintage stock car crowd is going to love it but the search is back on for a 3.54 or 3.78.. o even shorter, but I like the idea of sticking with a banjo rear.

I have a 9 inch lincoln[Ford] with disc brakes 3:55 gears in my 41 lincoln continental.It seems to be a good combination for a heavy car.

 

im using a 39 v8 banjo, closed drive, cant go wrong with a banjo

 

Well, as soon as the snow melts and we can access it, a friend and I are going up north to get a rear end out of a 40... not sure what the gear ration is since the car is literally buried in white stuff right now but that's something to plan for.
Are the widths the same on a 40 as opposed to a 36? Does anyone know where I can see a photo or a diagram of how the rear spring is set up?
I know this is pretty mundane stuff, but I'm starting to get so excited about parts coming together finally I'm ready to piss my pants.

 

8.75 Mopar, with 3.55 in ´29 Ford Roadster

 

Im in the process of building a 32 highboy coupe and will use a 1949 Ford passenger car rear end. Its sorta like an early version of a Ford 8". The original ratio is 3.73-1 and the width is 571/8 from axle flange to flange. The brake backing plates are from a 1968 Galaxie 500 11" brakes and the drums were modified slightly to fit. Nice clean looking, out of the norm housing. Heres a few pics of the rear end and in the chassis that Ionia Hot Rod Shop is fabricating for me.
