Speaking of Ford, the pre-'93 Ford Ranger rears are 56" wms to wms and available in 7.5" and 8.8" ring gears. Just picked one up for my '29A rpu. Perfect width.

    The '90 model I got is a 4.5" X 5 pattern. It's out of a 2wd truck. Don't know about other years or the 4wd models.

  6. My 89 Ranger is Ford, 4 1/2" x 5.

If you get the rear axle from a 4x4 more than likely it'll have a locking diff.

The brakes are - I think - 10" and fairly narrow.

Even so, they do ok in the Ranger and it has disc brakes up front.

Ratio is 3.74 if I remember right.
    (5-speed.)

Not sure what the automatic ratio is, 3.54 rings a bell.

The 4x4 rear axle is the 8.8"

My S-10 rear axel is 53 3/8" and that is measured from outside of drum hub to outside of drum hub.

If you use the S-10 rear axel try and get the newer models from 1998 and up, if you do life becomes a little bit easier because the early S-10's use an unusual wheel cylinder mounting setup, while the later brakes use a standard 2-bolt mount.

From what I have learned the the S-10 axel has a lot going for it because first off it's cheap as hell. Z-28's and Trans Ams came with basically the same set-up so you shouldn't worry about the strength. Gears are easy to get and other parts you can get at the local parts store for pretty cheap.

Bolt patterns of course are the common 5 lug on 4 3/4" circle. If you find an S-10 blazer they are not the same, the measurement is close to 58"

FYI-Most of the S-10's you find have 3.73 gears

Hope that helps you in your search. The T-Bucket builders use a ton of these rear ends and they hold up great.

Hey, I just checked craigs list in your state and there is a ton or S-10 rear ends for sale for cheap

PS: My S-10 axel that is 54 3/8" is a 2wheel drive. If you want to go wider just use the 4 x 4 rear.

I do to but I don't think it will hold up to a SBC very long.. Unless you know of someone that can build it up for me to withstand a SBC for less than $an arm or a leg, I am gonna try a little more stout rear.. Trust me I would love to run a BANJO or a QUICKCHANGE but I am a average guy with an average income...lol Or better yet hook me up with a nice flatty....

How about a differential from a 1993 Fox Body Mustang it has the 302HO engine. I'm buying the donor car for the World Class T5 transmission, driveshaft and differential to put in my 28A. It seems the rear end is 59-11/44" wide while the model A width is about 56". So thoughts on running as is or narrow it?

Sorry, I'm a newbie BUT I am asking the question for myself....I am buying a 1993 Fox Body Mustang for its World Class T5, driveshaft(to shorten of course) and the 8.8 differential. The rear end appears to be 3" wider than the A.

  16. when figuring out rear end width you need it depends on what size tires and wheels , and the wheel offset

59" seams a bit wide for a fendered `28 model A, but if you will be using skinny tires who knows

here is my `28 Tudor with a 56-1/2" wide Maverick rear end and 235/75R15 tires and 15 X 7 wheels, not sure of the offset 28tudor2.jpg

Thanks, I'm not opposed to having the axles narrowed. I am deciding whether to run open fender or keep the fenders/runing boards. If open, I can probably find a wheel offset that could take care of the 1-1/2" extra width....thinking out loud here with help from you guys! Nothing like ressurecting an OLD thread. Just shows I have poured through a lot of messages first. :)

Why would you go thru the extra costs of narrowing an axle when there are other axles out there that will work?

Just asking the question....I got the donor car pretty inexpesively
I think its getting harder and harder to find the older axles. I used a Maverick rear end in the V8 Pinto I did way back when I was a teen...(I mean WAY back!)
