I have seen people do it time and again, esp the newer generation of mustang people. They know how to build only to a certain level and can go no further, they run into a wall. They reach that wall and get frustrated and bang into the wall for a summer or two then sell it all blaming it all on being junk. Then after a year of healing their wounds they'll begin the process all over again.
About every three years i buy another nitrous plate system off this same guy that trys to build an s10, small block 406 roller moter. He'll get it to a point and embarasses himself at the track because he can't tune what he has and has made bad decisions on componants, puts nitrous on it to compensate and does it wrong, embarasses himself further and parts out the whole mess. The entire cycle takes 3 years.
Why do they do it? Thier heart is in the right place but pride, foolishness, whatever won't let them ask other people or listen to those who have done it right.
Maybe they should take up bass fishing.

I have no idea why anyone would sell it all off.. but if anyone is looking to unload all their 40 ford stuff, I'll wait over here by the door.. ;-)

in 2000 I sold my starter and alternator shop---had been a father son thing and the old man died christmas 1998-----was located in a small town---customers were ranchers and such, I would trade all the time for one mans dead shit all day long, sometimes a starter for a 350 chevy would get me a complete car.----Grabbed A Brass Ring--took the money and ran----sure wish I had the shop now

    This is a good question.
Every now and then I "purge" and get rid of everything. I cleaned house once big time and sold every piece of Harley stuff I had. why? I really can't stand the people that ride bikes, LOL. I love Harley's but hate the people that ride them. politics, cool factor, folks that want just fame & recognition. Just can't stand them. over time I have bought stuff That "I" like and "I" would build because "I" think its neat. I keep choppers in a little box in my mind and don't share it with anyone so it stays fun for "ME" The car thing is becoming the same way. I know Kustoms are falling out of favor but I still love them and will always just do what I want and fuck everyone else. But the guy that just "Has to be famous or in a magazine or on TV" I usually have no use for, I'll work on their stuff and cash the check but they won't be a friend of mine.
So I'd say its the people that suck the fun out of things for me and make me want to sell stuff off and not have anything to do with it. But ya have to do what you like in the long run. Sometimes if you sell everything you have enough Cash to finish "ONE" thing you've been working on.
you're stuff can own you, very true!
    I'm done rambling

Whenever I "purge", it's usually just one big thing. Letting go feels great, like a burdeon has been lifted from my shoulders, and my time is my own.

Then, some great deal falls into my lap, and I have to buy it. Then, in order to build it, I'll need some expensive, specialized tool or piece of equipment I've been wanting, but didn't have money for, so I buy it.

Then, some other great bargain appears, and I buy THAT, and since there's no little or no hot rod fund left from the purge, it takes forever to build and projects from two projects ago are still not finished. My wife then gets tired of parking her new car outside, and something else gets "purged".

That's why right now, there are two more old travel trailers to be built, the Diamond T pickup to pull them is just a cab and chassis setting in the shop, the roadster isn't finished, the gas gauge STILL doesn't work in the wagon, the convertible has a dead battery, the Honda 50 hasn't gotten a new motor, the Chris Craft needs a coat of varnish, the T'Bird convertible is still waiting for paint, and I'm seriously thinking of selling something to free up space and $$ to build the Auburn Boat-tail custom somebody photoshopped here a couple days ago.

    Time to purge...

You could never list ALL of the reasons for getting rid of STUFF. For the most part it's a personal deal and not anyone elses business. A lot of the major reasons have already been listed and doing it for family and friends is the most admirable. My own obsevation is that a lot of people get into the "flavor of the month" activity and when something else new comes along it's "bye-bye" to the current accumulation.

It is way too easy to become completely immersed in this thing and the next thing you know you are burned out with it. It's better to just take a break for a while if you can before making any rash decisions. As said before, when you get too much stuff, your stuff owns you. Time also keeps moving forward and as we go forward in time our lives change and our perspectives change.

Some folks quit when they realize that their identity and old cars have become one and the dominant part is the old cars. When a guy looks back and sees his life through a clear clean lens it sometimes is a major wake-up call to change priorities. Family and friends outweigh old iron on the Scale of Life.

I needed to buy crack to replace my obsession with cars and parts. And thats all I have to say about that. Joking aside I would do it in a heart beat for my family. Its metal rust and paint sell it if you have to.

I've been doing this on & off since the 50's & have sold it all several times over. Divorce- starting a biz & needing money, son having a heart attack at 35 & just plain burn-out.
The 1st 3 you can come back from when life changes for the better. Burn-out, that's a whole different animal & tough to shake. The last burn-out was 4 years ago & I still have thoughts of giving it all up to this day. It will suck the excitement right out of you.
I think one of the reasons I like the HAMB is to see how excited some of the younger members are about the hobby. Reminds me of me- many years ago. When I get down- I come here.

Right now, I should be getting the car ready for a show out of town in the mountains. We leave tonight but I'm here instead, trying to find the energy to prep the car for the drive & keep myself from finding reasons to stay home.

  16. Have you been to the Masters house lately? Man what a collection of hot rods! Old bikes, and tin out back......

Still has enough left over to support that live-in stripper he is trying to convert.

  17. Selling off your stuff is a sickness, not collecting it!!!! You guys have it all wrong!!!!LOL!! Don't ever cave in!!!!!

My "curse" was a 10x10 storage unit with stuff I hadn't SEEN in ten years. Instead of dealing with the suff, I would pay the storage fees and not deal with it. After 10 years and $20,000 in storage fees, I'm dealing with it.

LIFE! Sometimes people do something for so long it becomes boring.
I've been doing the "car thing" since I was about 6 years old. By 12 I had my coupe. My folks were SO DEEP into the car stuff that I didn't really get a "normal" childhood. Family vacations revolved around car shows. There were ALWAYS other peoples rods my dad was working on instead of teaching me about sports or other "normal" father-son stuff.
I'm not bitter about it in the least. But I've promised myself that I will NEVER be so obsesed with with any material items over the time I can spend with my children. I am fortunate that I have gotten to be a stay-at-home Dad for the past 3 years with my kids. My wife has a GREAT, but time consuming job that allows for this. I have sold most of the neat car stuff I had collected over the years that isn't specifically for one of the 2 cars I currently have. I felt it wasn't fair for my wife to bust her ass, without me contributing somehow. I still buy stuff now and then, but nowhere near like I used to. Because of the money, AND a lack of interest. After 30+ years of a life of cars, IT'S GOTTEN BORING! I don't go to many shows anymore, because it's always the same cars. Most swaps suck because of Ebay. I have more fun taking the coupe out for an evening ride than anything else. Even that hasn't happened for almost a couple months! I'll never get rid of my coupe, but "taking a break" from car stuff for me is happening more and more.

Everything I own is for sale, for a price
A lot of the stuff that's here is here just because it is worth to me than it is to anyone else, or no one who might want it knows it's here.

    Question;
How come so many people don't know the difference between the words "Sell" and "Sale" or know there is a difference but get it backwards?
LOTS of people here on the HAMB...

I guess phonics only works if you enunciate properly in the first place?:rolleyes:

Stuff eventually owns you. I like the quote Jesse James used when he was on powerblock a while back promoting the Dead Man show. Something about the more stuff he has, the more he has to insure and take care of. I totally understand that. I currently have 3 bikes, one sits in the living room and the other has a tarp over it in the garage. Both uninsured and just wasting away because I can't ride them all at the same time. A boat in the back yard, hasn't seen water in 4 years. New 52 Ford project, and another flathead on the engine stand. Then there's taking care of a house, a job, a life, family, friends.

I only have so much time and I hate to see my "toys" just sitting there, dying. I'd rather have someone put it to work and get some fun out of it than watch it die in my possession.

I'll keep my garage full of tools, but I have been known to sell stuff out of that collection for half price because I only used it once and it paid for itself and I want my garage floor space back. Most everything that rolls or fits in the toolbox stays.

  24. I did this back in 2005. Sold my Pontiac, tools, parts, hubcaps you name it.
After building 6 cars in 7 years I just could not do it anymore. Not to mention my Pontiac was a god to me. Here I had a newborn son and spent all my extra time in the garage and no time watching him grow up, very little spent with him the first year and a half. Cars come and go but my son growing up only happens once.

I used to be partnered up with some Michiganders in a large salvage yard, 40 acres of cars with lots going back to the 50s..When the tax man cometh, especially to a cash business like a salvage yard, things get crushed for money..I have one of those aerial photos of the yard before the crusher and it is both interesting and heartbreaking to go over it with a magnifying glass and see what got crushed..in a short amount of time, with a loader and a helper with a torch I managed to rip out all the engines and trans, then go back with a screwdriver and get all the chrome script and logos..then boom about $62.00 each, at the time....

Since I have no kids and probably will not get married so those wont make me sell off everything but if the economy does not pick up I might have to let a couple cars go,my 37 Chevy p/u and 55 Ford convertible will never go and will sell the house before those two vehicles and definately will never sell my tools since I need them to make a living.
