I'm with Mike Z. on this one....love that wire and thin ww look....but those chromies with the right treads would be bitchin' too!
You don't necessarily need Skylark wheels....a good set of non-reversed Tru-Spokes....if you can find 'em.....I wish somebody would re-pop Tru-Spokes again..... Or how about a set of Tru-Classics with wide whites??
That with maybe a Buick emblem of some sort to make it look a little more original, and fat ww's. So, these aren't made anymore? The Wheel Vintiques are a grip.
Those are the shit ones. You need the knobs on the outside, to hold an out mounted hubcap. And by reversed, I mean turn the rim around, with the smooth back facing out. A little trouble to go through, but the look is amazing. Seems that car is worth it. I'm doing a set for the 51 in my avatar right now. A little pricey, but then what the hell.
HEY GROUCHO, IF I SEE THIS FUCKER ON BAGS IM GONNA POKE LIL HOLES IN THEM SO THEY NEVER HOLD AIR !! I LIKE THE WIDE WHITES, BUT THE BUICK SKYLARK WIRES ARE BITCHEN. WIRES, NO SKIRTS, PAINT UNDER THE FENDERS WHITE, EXHAUST THRU THE REAR BUMPER, & DRAWER PULL GRILL. LATE 50s / EARLY 60s MILD JOB WILL DO NICELY
These ARE the smooth back facing out. The "knobs" you're talking about are now on the backside. What up?
If you can afford 'em, bite the bullet and go with the Skylark wires. The other wire wheels are nice, but the Skylarks have that longer thinner spoke / more drum exposure that just looks better, sort of like Astros vs Cragar SS. It's pretty amazing how much they "lighten up" Pratt's 58 Impala. Plus I think they clear Buick finned drums without a problem, not sure if that's true for others. Tru Spokes are good option too... the Tru Classics in Radshit's post would look pretty badass if you made custom center caps with three-bar knockoff spinners or bullets. For tires, I still like the thin whites if you go with wires. What would really set it off: thin double-stripes!
Hmmm, lots of great ideas here. Lowering it goes without question. As far as wheel/tire combo I guess it depends on the era you want to represent. A nice custom 'cap and the wide whites you have would look good. I'd shave some of the trim off the car (bumper guards and front fender trim, etc) to give it a cleaner, less stock look. I'm all for narrow whites....Supremes, chrome reversed, wires....all great '60s look. Lee's '58 is the "da bomb" but do what you want with YOUR car. That's why they call it "custom".
Can somebody post a photo of Jack James Watson flamed 57 Buick? That's the black one that was flamed front to rear. I don't think Groucho should flame his like that, but it might give him a better "feel" of his car with the wires. Maybe there's a shot of it on Rikster's web site.
Is that a Special? My god what were they smoking back then? Obviously they had a different class of pharmaceuticles. Are those 15" wheels? Install a set of 55 Buick wheel covers and declare victory. Put a black light under the dash for night time adventure. Maybe an operating drivers side spot light. Maybe detail the trunk with soft material in case you need to sleep there. (to fully capture the effect drink MORE whiskey and start smoking unfiltered Pall Malls again.)
18 yrs ago i had a '58 Limited with KH wires & thin band white walls, a year later i bought another identical car but real cherry with low miles, re paited it & left the stock wheel tire combo on it.......it looked real good. I'll dig up some pics. Kev.
Here ya go, first pic is the one with the KH wires second pic is the cherry one as it arrived & third pic with fresh paint.
What's the 55 Buick hubcap look like? Also, wonder if i'm looking at this all wrong. The more i see my hubcaps, the more i like them. Maybe it's my HATRED for the red rim throwing me off? On the above pic, the caps look killer.
I hate to say it, but I think the red wheels help the car "pop" if your just going to stick with hubcaps. I understand the dislike of red wheels, and I have them on mine!(my car is red) If your interior was a different color, I would match the wheels to that color for something different. I always think that looks sharp, especially when combined with spiders!
Shit, that looks better already. More elegant by far than red. So for now i'll get some fresh WWW's, paint the wheels black, and lower it. That should satisfy me for a minute. The black rim makde a world of diff, thanks. I'd like to see the chrome if you got a minute
YES YOU ARE A YOUNGSTER .. RED RIMS ARENT THE BEST YOU CAN GET .. CUASE EVERYBODY DOES AND DID THAT .. AND .. UHH .. THOSE ARE FAT WHITES...
Hey Astros Look Cool .. Hey They Are Re Poppin The Skylark Wires .. And They Look Nice .. The Price Isnt Pretty I Think Like 2 Grand .. But They Are Nice .. Even Plain Steel Wheels .. W/ Nice Lug Nuts .. Or The Stock Caps .. Wonder What The Caddy Caps Would Look Like .. We Had A Set Off 55 Caddy Caps On My Uncles 49 Cad .. W/ A Bullet In The Center .. Simpple And Clean Lookin ..
TOO elegant of a car for that look. Looks like a theft recovery fresh out of impound, then someone felt sorry and put on chrome lugnuts to soften the blow of the loss.
The majority has spoken...and spoken with sagaciousness - either some chrome wires...some chrome reverse with little baby moons (the kind that snap INSIDE the lug chamber, not over it) or the bullets thingie...that car is beautiful...and it just needs some low-key "personalization". of course you could always stick some 10" x 13" wheels with zero backspacing and then put some 6.10x14 skinny whites on those, and have them hang out like a roller skate.... dj
I absolutely agree. So i'm thinking from ALL your input: Lower it, fresh WWW's, paint the wheels black, polish these caps and add bullets to them. All in favor...........
Lowered, chrome wheels (no reverse), wide whites and maybe those centers with the tall, smooth bullet (forget the name). Nice car for sure. Rod
