Technical What should I cast?

A rounded back frenching bucket with a separate swivel foot for a couple different vintage taillights so it could be screwed to back of PU cab or car package shelf as a third brake light.

I think your first casting should be something like a tag topper or club plaque. You can cast it and be done. Minimal machining to have a finished product. Just a little filing and sanding. Valve covers or intake manifold will take a lot of thought, and effort. You need to account for shrinkage and porosity, ect. Then it needs to be machined to reasonably exact specs.

I would make water cross-overs for Olds Rockets and Nailheads.
Olds needs them when using a 6 x 2 log manifold or when the water part was trimmed off an old intake. A nice clean cross-over that uses a Chevy thermostat and housing.
Nailheads need 'em cause they are sometimes lost or missing when buying a core engine, plus they are cast iron, a nice aluminum one that uses the Chevy thermostat housing in a plain version and a finned version to match the spark plug covers would be something that should sell.

 

What ever makes you happy is what you should cast.

Those are beautiful. Not enough nice finned valve covers for the various engines. I'd like to see 6x2 intakes that aren't presently available.

Cast whatever you want, as long as they aren't aspersions.

Both the spark plug covers and the carb tops are pretty nice!

 

Currently working on a 6 x 2 cross ram intake for the same motor plan is to cast it in individual parts - runners, flanges, logs ect. then tig it together. Its a ways out just 3d printing patterns at this time.

Please make some finned valve covers for the B/RB engines. I don't see any around.

I do a lot of work at a scrap aluminum foundry, really neat stuff.

Try and make friends with machine shops in your area and get ahold of some of there turnings.and clippings .

Usually good quality aluminum for making stuff.

Cans and bbq lids stuff like that is of a lesser quality.
Be carfull with lawn mowers and equipment ( chain saws trimmers etc)as a lot of them are made of magnesium! Stuff likes to burn!

The foundry goes through all there scrap and piles the mag they get mixed in there loads in a pile to resell. A few years ago one of the operators took a skid steer bucket of mag and dropped it in the furnace! They had no choice and just let it burn itself out. Furnace was pretty much done after that full rebrick and rebuild !!

 

Search "devil forge". They have a wide array of different foundries and forges. Mine can melt up to 20 pounds of aluminum which i think is a good start.

 

Have my first complete model all drawn up. I plan on using a match plate setup because it is easier to make a larger quantity of parts, and should be easy to 3d print. I have some of my renderings all drawn up below.

 

How about something simple like a traditional "el toro" shifter knob?

Another idea. How about an intake manifold that utilizes EFI components but looks like a 1960 Rochester unit to sneak by the HAMB?

Holy moly! Those are nice valve covers.

 

I was shocked when the Boss at worked asked me "can we make a clean room and put that filler in it to fill "lube".

 

I used a beer keg foundry I constructed (idea found on youtube) to cast an intake manifold(s) that connects a Latham Supercharger to a Weber DCOE.
