Put my Merc together with G 78 WWW, could'nt turn the wheels. Not even close. Gave them away..............OLDBEET

  14. 7:60x15. If you plan to drive it quickly on the freeway, 215r15. Of course the perfect roads of Arkansas won't need radials.

would there be any clearance issues running the 7.10's(or any other large tire such as the G78's) in the rear of the car with it being slammed?

7.10-15 Firestones (G78 equivalent) That's what I'm running. A very tall tire BTW.

The letter series tires are much wider than the number based tires, to me they dont look right. had some g78 on my chrysler (car had 760-15s stock) and they rubbed.....

No one said being cool was easy!

And by looking at Bumbsticks car, I would say ask him, LOL

If by clearance issues you mean having to un-bolt and slide over your rear axel in order to gain enough clearance to pull the tire out...then yes. Unless it's bagged.

But from my experiance, you are going to run into more problems in the front than the rear.

The G78 is a tall tire, but the way it fills up a wheel well can't be beat.

Get a Coker catalog and geek out on the dimensions. Look at cars you like and make a note of what they are running. Doesn't always say in mag article tech sheets. Takes a while to figure out what you like, but the research pays off. Also check out Lucas for Goodyears, Ive got them on my shoe box and people trip on em, cause Coker doesn't sell them. Lucas doesn't give you all the dimensions like Coker does, though, so you have to know what you want.

i'm not tripping on the mounting dismounting issue,,i 've had many low cars(and have two that its a pain to change the wheels on:D currently)

i just didnt want to order the tall 7.10's ,,then find out that i had to section the rear inner wheel wells. because NOW its dumped in the rear,,,,

i want a skinny taller bias ply...."just like the 50's bro"

..i mean,,,my "friend"(George Glass) wants a skinny taller bias ply "just like the 50's bro"

The only rear tire issue comes with running skirts, the body dives in quite a bit. I think you could run a much bigger tire without skirts.........OLDBEET

I had shitloads of headache picking the right tire for my '49,had lots of sleepless nights and your post Sam reminds to this bullshit again...really interesting stuff. There basically are only four tires to go with :

    6.70 Firestone with 3 1/4" whitewall...Javier has them on his '50 Merc...

6.70 BF Goodrich with 3 5/8" whitewall...Jiimmie Vaughan runs them on his super cool '54 Ford.Relatively small in diameter, pretty cool tire.Pic shows early version of the car.It looks even better with the painted roof now.

    6.70 Good Year with 4 1/4" whitewall...very traditional tire...weez has them on his '50 Ford,J.B. has the 7.10 on his '40 Merc,28.50" diameter,great looks,period correct Custom stuff.

7.00 Firestone with 4 1/8" whitewall...see pic below, other one is the 6.70 Firestone. The 7.00 is close to the 6.70 Good Year but has that cool ribbed side pattern. All of them are pretty cool tires imho and I wouldn't go wider than 7.00,narrow tires look good on bikes,Hot Rods AND Customs too...

The Coker site provides lots of info like weez said.And...I always wonder why the TRJ folks don't provide detailed info on tires when featuring Customs. The only weak spot in an otherwise perfect magazine.

No problem Butt ! Here's some other useful info...overall diameter of previously mentioned tires :

    6.70 Firestone is 28.58"

    6.70 BF Goodrich is 27.42"

6.70 Good Year is 28.40"...according to the Universal Tire website...can't believe that...?? weez, grab the tape measure ! Yes,please do it again... ( Edit : Still have your old PM...it says 28 1/8" across and 27 3/4" top to compressed bottom edge )

    7.00 Firestone is 29.29"

I currently have 6.70 Firerstones on my '49,stock steelies, rear is only lowered 5 inches...yet...have to unbolt shocks already to get tires off...and I'd say the tire on the Quesnel Merc is no Firestone, judging from the pic, maybe a Good Year, whitewall is over 4" for sure and tire isn't wider than 7.00.Hirohata Merc has smaller whitewalls.

Hopefully we get to see your "friends" Merc one day.
