What size exhaust on stock 283?

Need to get a new exhaust for my 57, currently has rotted out single exhaust with a stock 283. I plan to get true duals with some Smithy's but was wondering what size would be best 2" or 2.25" pipe?

 

2 in is best unless your exhaust shop wants to do 2 1/4

 

2" is more than enough.

 

Your stock exhaust manifolds will only accept 2" but you can bump it up immediately to 2 1/4. You will not notice any performance increase but I usually do just out of habit. Most shops don't charge any extra for 2 1/4. Anything more is a waste.

the car in my avatar has a 283 and 2" exhaust

 

2" is plenty and gives the 265/283 small displacement Chevy a really sweet sound unlike any other small-block.

 

1 7/8s on up... Go with whats the least expensive size, factor in mufflers and clearance.... Those didnt move much air.

 

Seems like the factory dual exhaust was 1-7/8".

 

The stock 1957 Corvette with the base motor (single 4barrel) is rated at 220HP.
I would go with the chart below.
I guess if you're at 200HP and under, 2" would be fine but if you are in the 200-250HP, it looks like the 2 1/4" would be the better choice.
The bottom line is that either 2" or 2 1/4" would be OK.
