    Hi gents...
As my 38 Standard nears completion was wondering what size tires give it the proper stance? It's a 50's era build. Black with flames, Sharp heads, two 48's, Fentons etc. I'm thinkin 195's on the front and 235's on the back with 52 PUP wheels. Small bottle caps and beauty rings...
    What say you? g

5.60 fronts and 8.20s on the back is what you meant, right?

Post pics of the car. Don't go overboard with the big/little look. They did it in the '50's but not often to the extremes taken today.

And I'm not anti-radials, they can look fine on a full fendered 50's or 60's car, but a period-correct '38 Ford really deserves a bias tire. Sounds like you've got the other details dialed in already, and if you have to buy new tires anyway, it's not that much more expensive.

Finally, someone prints the truth. " The TOO little with TOO big look" looks like the circus came to town, and the folks are waiting to see the clowns get out of the cartoon car :)

and 16" is NOT what was on the typical 50s rods. Rodders went with modern up to date rims like 15"s and they also used modern dished steering wheels by the mid 50s.

most modern builds are a cluster-f of different build decades.

A long time ago, I did an article for a now defunct magazine about the golden tire size for the rear of a hot rod... Essentially, I averaged out all of the rear tire sizes for each winner of the GNRS from the first to like 1965... The result?

Apparently, the perfect rear tire size is 30.25" tall and 7" wide.

    How's about that?

Yep, I recall that post, and I think you had 25" for the fronts..

But...that's a top show in Cal. I like to think that the rest of the country, or world, were building a "49 state build style".

The local kid worked on his heap in the parents driveway, and it never quite looked like the top show winners. I sure miss the "Joe Average builds". Very few are being built today. ****us is working on a 32 5w right now that might just fit the bill.

Just put new tires and wheels on my 32. Rear 7:50 x 16" 4" wide wheels Front 6:00 x 16" on 3+1/2" v8 60 wheels. I wanted 5:50's for the front but the wide whites do not come in 5:50's I think the 6:00's look good now that its done. Still need to do the caps and trim rings but I need to do some front end work first.

  10. July 4th 2014 004.jpg Copy (2) of July 4th 2014 007.jpg I know my car isn't a traditional hot rod but here's the sizes Ryan mentioned and how they look from a stance standpoint on my full fendered 29. 30.75" by 8" in the rear and 25.3" by 5" in front.

820's and 560's are kinda common but they work for fendered or hi-boy cars.

That is a nice car! For some reason when I saw those white walls contrasting with the black paint, I thought of shoe spats. Looks great!

I think your 38 Standard would look nice with 6.70x15" fronts and 7.10x15" rears.. I think bias plys would fit your 50's build better than radials...

Coker makes a great looking bias ply looking radial. Before those came out I installed
670-15's and 820-15's. But this may be too radical for your liking.

    Thanks all...
I guess I will jut go with 195's X 235's on 15" wheels. I'm worried a little about the 235's clearing the fender well. Regardless, thanks all...gene

I like the big and little tires, some of our membership don't like the look and refer to it as a clown car look that's fine but give me the stink bug***** up nose down any day.

    5.60-15 X L78-15 does it for me.
