Thank you, there's always a couple of jokers that put a spin on a informative thread, heck I'm guilty of it myself but I found the subject very interesting and it just proves that nothing is really new, Hemp once again is being used in manufacturing. HRP

I remember reading that W.H. Hearst made sure Hemp and weed were both illegal because he was afraid it would effect his paper mill and he would lose money.

interesting how the world comes full circle. apparently newer model toyota pickups have their wiring insulated with a soy based product. my grandfather had the unfortunate experience of owning one. apparently the mice like to eat the insulation. his rear wiring harness was a mess and they wanted to charge him 3 grand to replace it! He traded the truck in on another and I find out 6 months later that toyota issued a recall on them. didn't help gramps and the money he lost though....

    sorry for the rant!

Probably a hundred years ago wire and auto manufacturers conducted tests to determine what types of wire insulation were favored by vermin or rodents. It's been a problem from the gitgo, for example in home wiring, fires have resulted. They added bittering agents or somesuch to make it less attractive. It is bizarre that somebody somewhere thought making wiring insulation out of a food item was a good idea and further nobody along the way ever pointed this out.

But that kept it in the 'Ford Family'. Evangeline's brother was John Lafayette Cote. John married Mildred Gray. Mildred was the daughter of Edward Gray, who was Ford's Chief Engineer at Highland Park. Mildred and John had three daughters. Their daughter Sally Jane Cote married Warren Packard III. Yep, in those early days it just went 'round and round! (My grandfather had worked for Edward Gray from before the 'Ford days' until five years after Gray left Ford Motor and again from 1937 to 1939 when Gray died. Gray built 'Grayhaven' where Gar Wood had his mansion on the Detroit River and that's where grandpa last worked for Gray so after his death grandpa continued working for Gar Wood during the war years, there at Grayhaven, on Spanish outboard engines (Soriano) used to power Storm Boats but before that used by Gar Jr. and others, winning many outboard engine boat races.

Ford was the most influential man of the previous century. Through his innovations in many areas we are able to enjoy the things we do today. Was he perfect? No he was a human just like us. But he was willing to try just about anything and did try most things. He like other great men was not scared of failure! Like his good friend Thomas Edison said when he had tried about a thousand things to make the light bulb, with no success. When asked , at that time, about his failure, he said what failure.... I now know of a thousand things that WON’T work! Anybody that has not failed has never tried much!
Somehow tearing down great men, makes some folks feel big!

Seen a commercial lately that shows Ford putting coffee bean hulls in their plastic to make headlights. Still trying to use cheaper organic compounds to make everyday products.

Henry Ford most probably was interested in helping out the farmers by using farm materials, and thus experimented with them.

However these "natural" materials are more expensive and labour intensive to produce and are more difficult to maintain consistent properties. Oil is cheap, plastics made from them can be carefully tailored to the end use, and are indigestible.

I would guess that modern car makers are using "natural" materials because of government and societal pressure to be "green" and they probably know that such materials are likely to be more susceptible to rodents and have other inferior properties.

Much like oil companies don't produce reformulated gasoline because they think cars will run better on it.

Sure, help the farmers find a wider market for their crops, and sell them a Fordson Tractor so they can grow even more crops, Smart !
All very interesting. I was aware of Henry's interest in soy beans, but never heard anything about hemp.
Seems Ol' Henry and I had something in common...I too had an experimental "hemp" plantation back when I was in college.:D

It is almost as if almost all of you guys are unaware that hemp does not contain THC, the only cannabinoid that has a psychoactive effect.
