I'm buying a set of Halibrands, knockoffs and blackwall tires to change the look of my '34 Vicky. Is anyone running the blackwall tire combination of "matched" 195/75R-15 fronts and 235/75R-15 rears on your car? I'm going to run those sizes but want a matching tread pattern and nice smooth sidewall.Any suggestions for the tires?...Thanks... Mike... hemifarris@aol.com
Not too much stagger to that combination, but it should work OK. I prefer a little shorter front tire (165R15, about 24 inches tall) to get a "big and little" look. The 195/75-15 tire should be almost 27 inches tall. The 235/75 rear tire is 29 inches tall, and a good choice for a fendered Model 40 if you want a not-too-aggressive look. Note: The tires on my roadster pictured in the avatar are 165R15 front, P245/75R16 rear.
That car would look awesome with elephant ears, '40 steels, blackwall bias plys with toilet seats, and the rear really low.
On my 32 delivery I run 145X15 with 5" wide Eric Vaughn Real Wheels on the front and 235X15 with 8" Real wheels on the back. I like a lot of rubber rake.
With the larger front fenders on a '34 I'd like to stay with the 195 front to fill the wheel well. The front fenders are so large that too small a tire will look out of place. 195/75R15 and 235/75R15 are the sizes it has now with the whitewalls. I appreciate the big and little idea ,like my roadster, but I might consider the 185 front.....My dilema is finding front and rear tires that are the same brand and tread pattern and hopefully a somewhat smooth sidewall.
I don't usually comment on these sort of threds, but I think you need slapped around a little bit for even considering a change of wheel and tire on that car. Oh, and I haven't been wrong about anything since june of '78...
And you're still not wrong. I like the look also. I first drove this car to high school in 1962. It's always been black with whitewalls and Tacoma cream wheels. The only difference is that they're now 15" tires as opposed to the 17" I used to run. I'm only going to buy blackwalls and Halibrands so that I can oc***ionally change the look....I just can't seem to find a set of blackwalls with matching tread in 195/75X15 and 235/75X15 sizes.....
yep it looks good on the wheels that are on - ive also got two sets of wheels tyres to change around if I want, one set of whitewalls and one set of blackwalls with a set of steels and a set of ARE's - good idea ive got blackwall tyres however rear tyre is a 265x70x15, front is a 195x60x15 - both bf goodridge and trad matches. always thought 225/235 rears were a bit small.
i want to say i used those size tires on this 35 ford crew cab.......the owner was a bit older than me ....and wasn't into slammed stance, and big-n-littles like i was .....so i went conservative....had 6's and 8's.....with the 235's and i think 195 's ....but could have been 185's....if it would have been mine....a 165 would have been better.......brandon
I thought you were warned about changing those wheels. Seriously, I think the 235s are good but the 195 is a bit large for the front. It's full fendered, nobody will point and laugh if the tread don't match.
On my 31 on 32 rails roadster project: Front: 165R/80-15 4 ½" tread width 25" tall 5" x 15" wheel Rear: P235/75R-15 6" tread width 28" tall 6" x 15" wheel Front and rear tread patterns don't match, but that's ok. Most highboy roadsters don't match front and rear treads nor are they expected to by most. Kinda goes along with the track roadster look our cars are styled after. I chose these sizes to imitate the look of bias-plies . . . and I know that a knowledgeable person isn't going to be fooled, but I got the look I wanted with a radial tire. You shouldn't have any probs with differing tread patterns on your full fendered car. Long as the sidewalls match. And they're round....
Thanks for the input...I'm a stickler on matching treads and tires. My highboy (above) has matching treads and bias tires....as you remember the traditional highboys had bias ply....."Weemark", I'm going to run 235X15 because I want to lower the rear a little more and the 235 fits the rear fender wheel well perfectly..."krylon32"...I'll look into the smaller tire. I currently run the 195 and it can still go a little lower......Mike
From Halibrand. They're having a sale this week, although I just took one of the photos of my car and blacked out the wheels and tires and I like that look ,blackwalls and black steelies, even better. I did that after reading "SEYMOUR'S" advice about steelies.
As for radials, its hard to beat the old MichlinX blackwalls. 165rx15's 235x70rx15's They match. There hard to find but they are out there. On my 40 I also run Diamondback whitewalls. 165r15 235x75r15 Threads don't match -------------------------------- Vagabonds cc
I decided to run blackwalls, black steelies and '40 standard caps to give it a more sinister look. I bought Coker whites for the front and Coker redlines for the rear. I painted the whites and redlines with non smear water based black paint from Miller tractor and turned them inside. Their black tire paint is awesome.I did it this way so I could have matching tread patterns.I painted the art deco V8 black and green to match my roadster wheels. I'm now going to put '40 caps on my roadster and paint them the same and ditch the roadster's '48 caps.I'll keep the whitewalls and wire wheels so I can give it an occasional different look......Thanks for everyone's input....Mike
I've seen the new Halibrands. They're beautiful copies of the originals, including the Halibrand logo.
BFG's:165 R 15's on the front; 235 75 15's on the rear. The rake is nice and the handling is good too!
