It really depends on the look your going for, personally I prefer the tall skinny tires unlike Denny,he likes the 6o's style steamrollers! :D HRP

Skinny or wide they have to be tall enough to fill out the wheel well opening right. From experience that wasn't all good steam roller wide tires on hot rods love to hydroplane on wet roads at all the wrong time if you plan on driving further from the garage than you can beat a rain storm home from
It gets a bit hairy running 70 or better on a strange section of highway after a rain storm and hitting that one low spot where water doesn't drain off well with wide tires. Had a guy describe my spin out spin by spin on the CB while I was spinning and going into the bar ditch and then driving out one time. Truck spun out three different times with those tires on it.
Best thing I can suggest is start collecting inspiration photos of highboys with tires you like the looks of and go from there when the same size tire keeps popping up looking just right.

Man that 285 70 is a beast of a tire but doesn't have that race only super wide look to it.

8.20 x15 bias for that true hot rod nostalgia look.

It's hard to find a radial tire taller than 29" that isn't real wide. And 29" tall is a little on the short side for a 32 hiboy.....30-31" tall is definitely better. Any recommendations that are actually in stock as of late 2017? If your hot rod has a tall tire in the back, better hope they are not wearing out, because chances are they are no longer being made in load range C or D, usually just E, which is a little too stiff......do some checking!
Forgot to mention.....plenty of these tires have horrendous looking sidewalls too.

I'll also vote for "it depends on the desired look."

    I've used 8.20-15's and 285/70-15's.
