Thank y'all for being the voice of reason over the dooms dayers. PLENTY of fantastic and safe stuff to do in New Orleans, but not so much is car related. History, partying, food, culture, the sites, the architecture....tons of stuff to do, as has been mentioned. Best safety thing is to keep to the populated streets that are reasonably well lit and you'll be fine. I'm heading back in June and July and can't wait!

One thing to watch out for...No matter how good a girl look's,, She might not be a girl..:D

There is a lot of them walking around that work there, And you would be surprized at how well some can pass as a girl.....And no I didn't get fooled..:D
But I did see some that was way to drunk to know better..:D

As said before, the D-Day/WWII Museum is a must see. I went down there a few years back and stayed around the Covington area (just the other side of the causeway from New Orleans). I didn't stumble upon much car related aside from a small cruise in type deal with some muscle cars and street rods, but I had a rental car and spent almost a whole day riding around the back roads between Covington, Bogalusa and Slidell and found quite a bit of old abandoned tin sitting in yards and back in the woods not far from the roads.

I havent been there since Katrina, but there used to be a little place called Mothers that had a sandwich called a Ferdi that went pretty good with a cold beer.....over near the casino on a street whose name I cant spell or pronounce...Touchipolitas or something like that...and I was a tourist, so I liked the muffalettas from Central grocery and the omelettes from the Camellia grille...most of the time the street car was the safest way for me to get around.Have a good time!

Mother's is indeed a great place! It's at the corner of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas. They're known for their sandwiches with "debris". That's basically a mixture of all the gravy, juices, and meat from their ham and roast beef sandwiches, maybe others, too! My personal favorite is the roast beef poboy with debris, but they also serve a pure debris poboy. As far as I'm concerned, it never disappoints! It gets crowded, though...

Central Grocery and Camellia Grille are also great recommendations! Burgers at Port of Call are also highly recommended. They're on the NE side of the Quarter on Esplanade.

Damn, I'm getting hungry and I just had lunch!!

Wow thanks for all the info!! I will check a number of those places out. The bars I will have to pass on this time. I have the kids with us on this trip. But definetly going to the war museum ,airboat trip and sadly the wife wants to do plantation tour. Not remebering the one who asked about the 16-23. Those are the dates I will be in town. Mike what day is the show near you? I will have to look and see if its close enough. Thought about running down to Red Jackets firearms just for the heck of it. Maaybe will catch someone there.

  11. Take the kids to Audubon Zoo at the end of Magazine and to the Insectarium on Canal. Eat some bugs. Ripleys Believe It Or Not is a rip off. Don't let the kids look at the tee shirt shops.

Bobber the show is On Saturday in Madisonville, it's about a 30 minute drive from new Orleans. Not a lot of hamb friendly cars but a nice family friendly place.

  13. Hell, I would go to Madisonville just to eat at Mortons.

The worse crooks there used to be the police...they were liars and Moon Landrea was a crook for sure....in 1970, they told me I could park where I did in a designated parking space....2 hours later went back to the car and it was gone...

Yep...the police got it...cost me almost 120.00 to get it back...about a month of my military pay at that time...protested this and they about thru me in the pokey...

Probably has not changed much I bet....

Actually (and thankfully), I think quite a bit has been changing lately....for the better! But yes, New Orleans (actually, I would say most of Louisiana) politics doesn't exactly have the best reputation. And historically, that reputation is deserved. :( I think in post-Katrina LA, good changes are brewing. At least that's the impression I get from all my family/friends who still live there.

^^^^^really, youre relating a personal story from something that happened in 1970 and obviously have not been back since.....my mom lives in Arden, NC and she misses new orleans everyday.

I was raised in New Orleans and its a great place...all this negative crap about murder rate and carry a gun and all that shit seems overboard. Yes there is a crime....didnt know New Orleans wwas the only place that had it. Anyway mostly its the shitbirds killing other shit birds so whatever. ANyway it will be obvious where to go and not go but if you any where near 9th ward you will notice it quickly and you shouldnt be there anyway. Not much for a car scene but you can have a damn good time for cheap. Grab a 32 oz beer for 2 bucks and walk down the street. Watch the weirdos and some good bands.

For the record. Been shot at twice in Atlanta, car broken into 3 times in atlanta, once in TN, moms house broken into in NC and Ohio.....if someone asked about going to those states I would bitch and judge the whole area because of that.

You can have a blast in new orleans if you open yourself up to it.....just walk with your head up and notcie your surroundings....as you should do anywhere you go.

In Metarie you should drop by the Quik Chek on Clearview Parkway for a Po Boy...

If you do go to Mother's walk across the street to the Acme Oyster House...touristy and overpriced but it always amazed me to watch those guys shucking the oysters.

Someone else mentioned it but Port of Call is the best burger in town.

Oh, if you are looking for a nice meal out then try the BBQ shrimp at Pascal's Menale.

One caveat...these are all pre-Katrina recommendations...haven't been there since that. But, all mu friends that have been back say they are all still around. I used to live there for a little over a year and I would say ignore all the BS people are saying...it's a great town and with a little common sense, like you need in any big city, you will be fine.

Sorry that all I listed are places to eat...but if bars are out this trip then you just eliminated half of my favorite Nola activities...so I just gave you the other half!

Hey guys I am back from the trip! Had a great time down there. The kids didnt want to leave. We did some of the touristy stuff but ate way to much at to many places. The food down there is awesome. The WWII museum was great but didnt have enough time to see it all. Spent several days checking out the french quarter and market and yes watching some of the wierdest and funniest people ever. Went on an airboat tour. Had a great captain who actually went in the water out there witrh gators. He was nuts but very entertaining. Had a good time with my wifes family and friends. Doesnt alway happen that way with her family. Again thanks for all the input andd we are definetly going back someday.

Hey....I probably know you....was a Ga Low Rider.....Chesser knows me real well...had a blue 55 F100.....I still pal around with Bucky when we attend car shows together.

I did go back....had a two week stint with the Navy there....the 2nd time was much better....but will NEVER FORGET BADGE NUMBER 1657...This little stint by the police cost me a marriage...my wife thought I was way too easy on the police when we ended up on the 12 floor or so down there...and the lies told to us was such a criminal act on its own....we went down there to save our marriage....spent the whole time trying to get money to us so we could go back to the base in Memphis....needless to say....we seperated about a week after making it back to Memphis.

The city had a real racket going...when we went that night to pick our car up from the pound....there were 4 lines...and about 6-8 people in each line....the lines never got any smaller....that by definition....CROOKS RUNNING THE CITY !!!!!

Just a word to those heading down there.... IF THE POLICE SAY "YES, ITS OKAY TO PARK THERE....THEY ARE LYING!!!!!
