The HAMB is full of young guns, but I agree, most of us ain't getting any younger.
I'm meeting a guy at my bike shop in the morning who is going to pay me crazy money for 80s and 90s BMX stuff that's been in boxes in the back for years. He's about 40,and it's exactly the right time for me to sell this stuff. In 20 years, all the OG BMX guys will be 60. What'll it be worth then? Not so much,I think.
As somebody already said, maybe I'll be able to buy a 32 coupe someday... if I'm still above ground.

I guess I read your first post wrong. It seemed like you had been lusting after these cars for sometime and now they've all come up at once. Well I change my answer then...my first question is how rusty is the merc-illac? Does the cad motor turn over? Cause 3k doesnt seem to leave much room for profit if its a rust bucket with a seized motor. Yes the '39 for a grand will net you a quick flip if ya give it a spit shine. Heck as blasphemous as it sounds you might make more parting it out. The '40 might make a few bucks depending how tastefully it was hot rodded back in the day. I always find when I go into something expecting a quick flip thats the time when everybody is broke or has found another project for cheap and are tapped out. JohnnyA

P*** the info on the cars over.

  4. Every one of those is a money maker if they're decent. Buy all, flip one or two and keep the one you like best.

Years ago I did the 90 day note and then renew them. I was in the bank less than 3 months ago and was talking to one of the bank officers and said something about 90 day loans. I was told that banks no longer did them but would take out a equity line loan. Ah for the old days when the bankers knew you and could make decisions with out putting every thing before the board..................................................................................................................... Back to the cars I would pay a very genorous fee if I could be able to buy the 2 ford's. The prices appear to be very reasonable if they are in fair to good shape.

It's a hoarder's dilemma. They always come the best deals when you have the least money. But then, I could have a yard full of cars at any given time If I had a couple thousand bucks and a tank of fuel in the tow vehicle. You just learn to settle back because there will always be "deals".

  7. Jim,
I usually just get depressed unless I am flush then I just get poor so I can get depressed the next time. ;)

You idea sounds OK but the question becomes will the cars still be there when all is said and done. You can't really depend on everything selling in a timely manner.

I was born and raised here, 7 generations on the same piece of property my mom and dad collected old cars so I grew up with them, I know of pretty much every car in this country, some of these cars have not seen the sun in the last 40-45 years, I can remember my dad and mom trying to buy some of the cars that I now go and check on. The Barris merc convertible is one that my Dad was always trying to buy, now it is not a big custom, it is a marron color, has a white top with white interior, not chopped, has the typical nose, frenched headlights, rounded hood corners, has 51 merc bumper in the front and has a beautiful custom made grill, has 57 buick side chrome that has been modified, has stock taillights that have been lowered on the car with a smoothed rear bumper and a kaisar guard on the rear, the fella that owns is had the car done, he even has a photo of Sam working on the nose of the car, that is the coolest thing, but he had the car built and he and his wife drove the car here when they moved here from CA in 1964 and the car was put in the garage around 68 and has never came out again. I will go get some pics of it this week and share with you all, I enjoy visiting with him, he is getting very old and he knows he has not got long to go, itis one that will be mine one way or the other, then the merc with the cad engine is one I want for myself, all the others I dont care about, I even know where there is a 40 ford he**** sitting, I would think it would be kinda rare, it is rough then I know of a 58 pontiac hard top it is a cool car, he wants 500 bucks for it, same with the 40 he****, 500 bucks. My wife and I talked about it and we are just going to sell a couple of the cars we have and go buy one then sell it and try to work our way up I guess, I just want to get some money in my car account, I mean this is the only way I can come up with, there are no jobs here, Branson is a seasonal job town and you make minimun wage, that is it, then you only get 30 hours a week or so. And at that the jobs are parking cars at shows or something like that, just no future here and no way to save any money, thought about moving but hate to leave my entire family and everything I have ever known. Anyways I will get you all some pics of the barris merc this week it is about the coolest car I know of here locally and try to keep ya informed as to how this adventure goes...Jim

the internet can bring the global market to you.

good plan. Buy the best one for the money you have. Make sure it's what the market wants, not what you'd like. Projects don't do well unless it's special.

The hobby money is gone, I'd buy the best car in the bunch and list it here on the HAMB or "That Auction Site". If that thousand dollar car is worth two thousand move it, take the profit and reinvest it. Don't look back and worry about what it may or may not be worth down the road. Not many people have play money these days, 10-25 dollar auctions are slow too. Bob

It sounds like you know all these people. I would worry about backlash if people find out your flipping the cars, and once you buy one or two, prices might rise on you, or people may be reluctant to deal with you.

Here's another option that does not require any capital from you, and makes you look like a good guy. Approach the owner of the car and offer to sell it for them with the provision to split any profit above what he was willing to sell the car to you for.

...or, if the local economy is as bad there as he claims, maybe the sellers will be thrilled. Some areas are really hurting, and if a guy helps out by buying what you can't sell yourself? It could lead to more referrals?
