Undecided what to put in my 54 chevy that i'm building into a mild custom.Any suggestions what's more cost friendly to build on a budget 327 or 350 sbc.

Yup, that's never been done. Put some Vette covers on it too. That'll shock 'em. Seriously, if I could get a 327, I'd get it. Not so much for bragging rights, but because it would make ME smile knowing I had one of the baddest SBC's ever.
I know this guy who'll sell me a complete 327 sbc that he's pulling out of his 55 chevy for $350. Just don't know how much i'm gonna have to spend to freshin it up.
I prefer the small journal 327's..just love the high winding little bastards, and have built a bunch of em including the blown one in my avatar. By far my favorite cube sbc. That being said, there will be a slight difference in cost's if your opting for top quality stuff from one to the other. Not crazy different, but they are.. Being cost is a factor, like the others said, the 350 will probably be a bit cheaper... But i'd save up the "bit" and build the 327 anyway Tony
The big expense is finding manifolds, mounts, hoses, driveshaft, rear end.... I had a ton of fun with a 305 and a saginaw 4 speed in my 53. open the catalog.
X2 i think it would be equally costly concidering they are both sbcs and both half a 4 inch bore so why would a 350 be cheaper , out of curiosity
'tree fi'dy are cheaper because of the mass produced numbers. But for the gain of saving money your loss of unique with the seemingly everywhere 350. Do the 327 for the sacrifice of being different, for being outside the box.
Cost shouldn't be too much different unless your building up an engine. You did Say freshen up right? Gaskets and tune up should be the same right? Either way go with the 327
Nothing wrong with a 350, but if you can get your hands on a 327 (especially if the price is right) go for it. The cost to freshen one up isn't drastically more expensive than a 350. Does the 327 you're looking at have power-pack heads?
Not much different in price you dont buy a full tank of gas for that money I think the price and condition on the engine you start with makes a bigger difference A set o cast pistons in summit is a few dollars cheaper for a 350 big journal bearings is a few dollars cheaper gaskets rings cam bla bla bla is the same
It depends on the condition of the 327. That is where I would focus my energy. If you are just needing to freshen it up, there will be very little difference in price. Either way, you will be very happy. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
If its a large journal (67 up) 327 then the only difference in the price of the rebuild will be the price of the pistons. 327 pistons will be a little higher. All the other parts will be the same as the 350, rings, bearings, gaskets, etc.
The 350 may be cheaper and the 350 should have more torque, especially if the right cam is used. More torque means More useable power in the lower RPM's where you'll be driving not a 6500 rpm's. You can have 500hp - I want 800 Foot pounds of tire shreading torque. Give us an idea of what your talking about on the rebuild? Is it a re-ring and bearing swap or a full blown bored, balanced & blueprinted, stroked, retro-roller cam, etc.
You said "freshen up the 327" so dose that mean it is running? If so the choice is easy. Unless the 327 smokes like a train, I wouldn't do a thing to it. Drop it in and let it rip.
300.00 for a complete & rebuildable 327 is a good price. If that 327 is a running engine with good compression and oil pressure that's a great deal @ 300 and great horse trading material to have no matter what.
Thanks for everyone's feedback i've decided to go with the 327. It is a running motor but i still want to have it looked at just to be on the safe side.It's a 1964 block does that mean it can only be a small journal 327? Does anyone know the answer to that.
